question about color change?

Ok, I have a question....My Morgan gelding that is 13 years old has changed colors. When I first got him he was a Red Chestnut, and now after having him for 3 months he is getting darker and darker. He is more of a Liver Chestnut now. He was under weight when I got him, he had no grass where he had been kept. He has gained weight since I got him, and has a nice meadow at my house. Does that make a difference in his color? Just curoius, I think he is a awesome color now.

Yes very much so!

Diet has a huge impact on how a horse looks. The healthier and happier they are the better they will look.

The nutrients that are in their diet can greatly impact how vibrant their hair coat is. Better hoof quality and better manes and tails too.

We normally feed a good mixed grass hay but because of the hay shortages up here last winter we switched to a somewhat coarse and mature but still well put up alfalfa hay. Some of our horses shed out to a much darker and dappled haircoat than they normally would. My QH mare Kitty is normally a deep chestnut/light liver with the silver/flaxen mane and tail. This summer she was a deep liver with dark almost black dappling.

Oh, yes! Better nutrition, healthier animal = healthier shinier coat, etc.
