My Daughter's Pony tripped in a class

We were at a horse show last Sunday, my daughter was showing in the morning jumping classes. She was in her last class of the morning, hunter hack, and all was going well till the pony tripped doing the rail work. She instantly starting limping so my daughter brought her into the center and hopped off. Right away the pony started holding up her right foot. Both my daughter and the judge looked at it and didn't see anything obvious and of course the judge had to get back to judging the class. I ran back to the trailer to get a hoof pick and when the class was over I went in but her foot was clean. We walked back to the trailer and were folllowed by a very nice couple who saw what happened, they looked her over, didn't feel any heat, swelling or notice anything out of the ordinary. When we got home I put her in a stall for 1 1/2 days buted her and wrapped her leg with DMSO. The next day when I let her out she appeared to be doing much better, she ran out of her stall, bucked alittle then trotted away looking very sound. We decided to give her several days off, plus my farrier was coming out Tuesday and I wanted him to see if he saw a bruise or something. Well no evidence of a bruise was seen with the normal amount of trimming he had to do and my farrier didn't want to dig around looking for one. So last night (Fri) my daughter tacks up and the pony is still very lame at the trot. I am freaking out because it's the weekend and I will have to wait around to call the vet and my mind is going crazy wondering if she did something major. We haven't had this pony long, we got her the end of March and we splurged on getting a nice well trained pony because my daughter has always ridden my starters or older trail horses that we've tried to make into open show horses. The beginning of June the pony popped a splint and ended up being out of commission the entire month of June. The lameness is on the same leg as the splint. Does anyone have any thoughts? Could a splint re-aggravate itself? I know it's impossible to say without seeing her, I guess I just want some reassurance that it's probally minor. Do you think it could be a bruise that hadn't showed up yet or that the farrier couldn't see yet? I am so paronoid that it could be a suspensory ligament, we could just kiss our nice well-trained pony Bye Bye as far as her jumping career

I think I would call my vet anyway if you want to protect the investment you made in buying a good pony. I remember your last pony had soundness issues as well. I hope it is nothing serious and your daughter can get back to enjoying her new pony soon.

Your right Dream Pony, my avatar is my daughter on a very well-bred welsh pony that we recovered from a partially torn suspensory ligament. I feel like we can't win and that these horses/ponies need to be in bubble wrap. I will be calling the vet on Monday but it's going to be a loong weekend.

You know it could be something very minute, but I would aire on the side of caution.. Like you said you will be calling the vet on Monday. I really don't know if I would waut til then. Maybe call them to see if they can give you some advice and they may want to come see her now. I don't know about the vets in your area, but mine would want to come, especially with some type of leg and or hoof injury.. I hope your daughters pony will be ok. Maybe just needs a little more rest. Tell you daughter to keep her chin up and everything will be ok.

Well I talked to my trainer today and she was upset that I didn't get a vet out a.s.a.p. I was really hoping it was minor (a simple step on a rock). I'll be calling the vet bright & early Monday...he wasn't in today, I tried calling.

In the meantime, why don't you try some very basic at-home stuff that won't hurt and will really make her feel better if she's off. Like you could do some simple massage; some hydrotherapy (hose the leg down for 15 minutes twice a day); maybe rub some liniment in there; and I'd also limit her running around time, maybe some handwalking for grazing.

Keep us posted!

Legs are very important, I wouldn't wait until Monday to get a professional out to look at it. The vet call may be a little more expensive, but it could mean the difference between a sound dream pony and a lame pony.

I can't tell you what is wrong with your pony, but if there wasn't a rock or a minor cut making it limp; and it's been going on for a week, and the farrier couldn't find anything wrong; I would be doing more than buting it and hoping.

How is the pony? I hope that you were finally able to reach the vet.

Called the vet today, he's just back from vacation so in otherwards swamped & double booked He thinks it's a trauma but said to turn her out to move around/graze. He'll be here Wed. afternoon. She doesn't limp while walking around and she hardly appears lame on a soft surface going to the left.
I hope I did the right thing by turning her out????

You are doing what the vet said, but how much moving around can she do? How big is the paddock. Just watch her closely and if she shows signs of getting worse instead of better then pull her back in.

She's out in a 3 acre field grazing, so she moves around quite a bit but is by herself and doesn't run. My vet is fromOSU & highly recommended by my trainer. He should know what he's talking about.......right!

Well I would think so...but he has also not seen the pony yet... I am sure that if you felt uncomfortable at some point.. your vet wouldn't have a problem with it. You have to do what you feel is the best at that point. If she is showing no more signs of lameness or soreness out there then all should be well. If you see her moving worse, then by all means put her in a smaller area then call the vet and let them know. Your eyes are seeing this right now. At this point you are the vets eyes and voice until he gets there.

I hope all goes well with that beautfiul pony. Maybe just a bad sprain, let us pray that is all.

Walking about is very good for the healing process as the frog acts as a blood pump. Your pony will regulate her activity according to her soundness. Ponies are especially smart. Even if she is sound don't be surprised if she doesn't pull up lame in the same ring in the same place. I've seen it happen. A gal showed an app and he got a mild sprain but that's all it took to go home. He'd be sound at home and start limping at a show. Numerous shows and vet calls later it was suggested a riding crop might cure his lameness-it did.
