RIP Sundance

the sunshine will no longer fall on her golden gilded coat. The rain pitter pattered gently around us as I cried into her mane one last time and handed her to a friend to watch her walk away. In all the years I have known Sundance she has hardly ever whinneied.. when she crested the top hill in the pasture overlooking the farm she turned and called back to the barn and all the horses answered. My heart was bleeding and I wanted to call the vet back and say NO dont do it... but I just held on tight to her three year old son and cried . She stopped before her grave and cried out once more, looked around her and then the vet and friends held her as her life slipped away. She went peacefully, lying there like the princess she was. She now over looks the bay and farm she was born on. She is still in pasture with her mates, and she is no longer in any pain. I miss you sundance, I hope to catch glimmers of you in friends you have left behind. RIP

Thank you all for your hugs and prayers. they were felt and apprecaited

You gave her the blessing of a peaceful end...and she knows and appreciates it.

My hugs, condolences, and love to you.

Best-

What a gift to give a great friend, an end with great dignity and love. A chance to 'goodbye' and 'all will be well' as she walked away for the last time. A peaceful place to rest the earthly body, while her spirit flies young and free again. An ending timed so as not to make that last walk an impossible chore.

(((((((((((((((((((((((HUGSS)))))))))))))))))))))) )))0 for you as you grieve for her going, but joy for her, pain free and whole again.

So sorry to hear of your loss.Loosing your best friend is hard and I pray that your heart will mend just when it needs to. I know right now it feels like it will be raining forever in your heart, but these storm clouds will soon pass and a rainbow will appear and may all your memories be good ones.

What a lump in my throat - that was the best gift Sundance could have ever been given. May god wrap his arms a little tighter around you tonight.

I just found this today, written by someone who went through having to take this tough decision, I thought it was beautiful.

The Gate

For horses, life is but a series of gates.
The First Gate:
A push into a bright new world.
Flowers, grass, milk and love,
A mothers gentle touch and smell.
From that moment on there were so many more
gates to pass through.
The halter, the saddle, first ride, me.
All those passages.
You life has been a series of gates since then:
Gates to fields, stall doors, onto trailers, and many different fields.
We traveled together through the years,
You always waited patiently for me.
I was always there to let you through.
Now I see in your eyes the look,
The knowing,
Asking me in silent plea
To take away the hurt.
So now I'll lead you one more time.
To a gate to free you.
I can take you to it,
slip your lead,
to ease you through,
To a place I cannot follow,
a long passage beyond the fields we know.

Travel with my love.
