Angry advice on rainrot and weight lose

so i need ya'lls advice if you wouldn't mind.

i have a horse that i had let out on trial for 3 wks.. only because the people lived so far away..i also wanted him to have a week to fully settle in and then time for them to ride..and figure it all out with him.. the people signed a contract stating he was to come back in full physical health as when he left and etc etc.. or no refund of money would be returned.

well needless to say no refund will be given.
Honor my 16.2hh TB gelding looks pitiful.

he came back had lost both front shoes
lost lot of weight - could see all ribs, hip joints, etc..
cuts in corners of mouth
rain rot severe
bad chipped hooves
headshy
etcc..

Its been about a month and im having no luck with him.

Hes still head shy
rain rot is being stubborn to get rid of.. i mean he looks gross
hes covered from head to toe in rain rot..where his hairs all coming out from it im having to kep him sheeted to prevent sunburn and blisters.. i take off when ever i can ive use mtg, medicated shampoos and ointment

im also having a hard hard hard time getting his weightback on
ive wormed him
checked his teeth
hes eating
drinking fine
spunky self as usual

so i started him on a weight gain supplement..the first week back..
say improvement right away..now nothing.. only gained for about first week..

any advice on how i can get this rain rot to clear up faster and how to help my baby gain weight..

oh hes getting oil in his feed too..

hes on dumor 12% feed and dumor weight gain supplement and corn oil..

any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you guys so much..
i know i could come to you all with any question ad get great advice and support in return.

For the rain rot, go to walmart and buy a cheap bottle of listerine (mouth wash) and dose him down really well with it and let him dry... (it kills the bacteria)

For weight... Might try some beet pulp, I've had really good luck with using calf mana to gain weight, and Jake always looked awesome (nice padding around ribs, shiney, ect.) while he was on just a little extra alfalfa hay too

The calf mana is just little pellets (like any other pelleted feed in texture and size) I started out adding half a cup, then slowly moved up to a cup-cup1/2 depending on the horse. Edited to add: I added this to thier "normal feed"

I never had luck with the weight builder supplements, but the calf mana did good on the appendix we used to own.

As for the beet pulp, it's a "forage" type I believe. I only used it once, but I've heard alot of people talk about how they liked it. I soaked my beet pulp because I have heard of it causing choking in horses if dry (it expands ALOT when it gets wet!)

No need to soak the calf mana though.

If your interested in the beet pulp, just do a search of the forum on it, there's been tons of disscussions on it

I used mtg and a flea comb. But Jack had it so bad, (my own dang fault, no idea what it was) that I ended up putting him on penicillen, cleared it up in a couple of days. Although, I still did alot of picking, couple of hours a day. As long as he would tolerate it.

He may have a secondary infection going on with rain rot that long. Call your vet and see if a round of antibiotics is warranted at this point (probably is). Once you get that under control and his body isn't fighting the infection, it will be much easier for him to gain the weight back. You may want to try some probiotics to help with digestion, especially if you are going to put him on an antibiotic.

Listerene works because it has a high percentage of alcohol in it. That means it will also STING all those sores like crazy. I would stick to medicated baths, MTG, or other products made for fungus. Something that works well, cheap and easy - is take a tube of generic athelete's foot (lotrimin) and squirt into a sprayer. Add 26 oz of water and shake up real well. Then spray down your horse. You can also us the the lotrimin straight, but mixing it with water makes it go further and it still works.

Lightbulb Try Super14

For rainrot you can try Super14. It's a powdered supplement for skin and coat. You can get it at Tractor Supply or farm stores. It works wonders and quickly. Within a week you will see new hair growth. I have recommended it to others who also reported great results. I had both of your issues with my mare. For the weight, I used beet pulp, corn oil (which I see you are doing), and free choice of hay in her stall where other horses couldn't take it away from her.

Good luck and I hope he's improving day by day.

I wonder if he might have picked up some resistant parasites at the trial place - have you had a fecal egg count done on him? It might be a good idea to have that done.

I second the probiotics suggestion for sure. Can't help with the rain rot as I've never dealt with it.

I also suggest antibotics. and another worming..
.
Again listerine. and perhaps betadine and baby oil mix to soften scabs and disenfect. (Not at the same time)
Try not to over wet every day.
My vet suggested bath 3 times a week for a horse with cronic rain rot, and keep as dry as possible,
as for weight gain. perhaps a hay extender, with senior food.
I did find personal experience, that the corn oil causes loose manure on some horses. Trial and error all the time. What works for one is not going to work for another

I am not the best expert to tell you about your rain rot and weight issue, but I just wanted to say how sorry I am for your poor TB. Those people sure didnt' care for him. Maybe with the weight gain and proper nutrition again, his feet will get in better shape.

At this point, you may wish to use something that doesn't sting, like the MTG or lotrimin. Poor horse. I'm glad he's back with you.

I know it sounds harsh but you have to get the scabs off using a flea comb works and just do as much as he can tolorate. this condition thrives with lack of oxygen so getting oxygen to the skin is a must that is why the scabs need removed.keep him dry and in a well ventilated area. do not use ointments they hold moisture and you need to eliminate moisture. use batadine once a day for a week unless vet says otherwise. critical in clearing up rain rot is disinfecting everything the horse touches or you touch the horse with you can use 2 tbsp of bleech to a gallon of water to use on the equipment only.. hope this helps and good luck... also anything that will rub on the sores such as leg wraps, blankets, saddles should be eliminated while treating rain rot

I believe rain rot is a fungal infection and will need treatments for fungus such as a betadine shampoo. You may need to check him for lice as well they can really drag a horse down. I would have the vet check his labs as well. If you check my old photos section on my website on the bottom of the photos page is a story about a horse we saved she was in bad shape with lice and rainrot. I heard an old horseman tell me once to use roof moss remover to clear up rain rot but never thought that would be good for the horse so never tried it.

I had a horse with a stubborn case of scratches and I used cowboy magic crud buster and it worked really well.. I use soaked the area in it, let it sit for a few minutes to soften up the scabs, scraped them off, wiped the whole area down and sprayed it again.
