Foal heat diarrhea

I have had 4 babies before this one and have never heard of this. Poor little thing is all poopy but in good spirits. Vets said to keep a good watch on her so she does not dehydrate, with pepto 3 times day and zink cream. The dogs are helping a lot too, after she poops, 3 out of the 4 all wash her bum , with Shyla (the camera hog) becoming VERY protective of her while she lays and relaxes .

Depending on the amount of high hormone levels associated with a mare's heat as well as threadworm larvae found in mare's milk, it can do quite a number on some foals. Some babies can seem to wart it off, and some just have more sensitive digestive tracts.

Have you boosted baby with Probiotics?

I wasn't here when the vet showed up, had a doctors apt with my son. So all I got was a tub of zinc oxide WHICH THE DOGS ATE . Licked it right flipping clean . She looked good tonight and today so I'm hoping it's past. I'll do a good look over in the morning and if need be head to the pharmacy and pick up pedialite........and more zinc

Foal heat is messy, just keep her bum and legs slatherd with zinc oxide or vasaline. to keep from sticking on hair. and hopefully she will be fine in a few days.

I did some research on this earlier in the year. Foal heat diarrhea is actually caused by parasites passing to the foal from mom's milk, not hormones. I've had foals in the past with this, and I thought I had a pretty good worming program. The recommendation is to worm the mare shortly after foaling ( the day of foaling)with ivermectin. Then put the foal on a monthly worming cycle at one month of age. I did this this year and he did hasn't had one loose stool. But, this was just one case. Try it next year.
