Vaccinations

I'm sure this already has a thread somewhere but I cant pull it up on this computer as it keeps freezing, so my apologies now.

I was wondering how do you vaccinate a horse yourself? I know it is to be put into the muscle (I prefer the neck)
  • Is there a certain part of the neck to use?
  • How far in do you place the needle?
  • I bought vaccinations from JeffersEquine and am I supposed to dispense the entire shot into each horse? (I believe each vaccination is 3ml...I will have to double check on that one)
  • Can you also deworm and vaccinate in the same day (both healthy horses that are UTD on shots and worming)
Thankyou!

There is a triangle on the horses neck that is all musle. If I had a picture I could show you but can not find one that shows it well.

Most vac are 1ml if they are sigle doses just give it all the the horse. Single dose vac come with a nedle just put it all the way in and pull the plunger back just a bit to make sure there is no blod if so then just pull it out a bit and check again.

Over all it is quite easy. Some of the packageing will give you a picture of what part of the horses body to give the vacine.

Hope that helps.

Draw an imaginary triangle on the center of the horse's neck, from the mane down, and insert the needle in the middle of the triangle.
  • How far in do you place the needle?
About halfway in or a little further. No need to go all the way to the plastic, but make sure it is in the muscle, not just under the skin.
  • I bought vaccinations from JeffersEquine and am I supposed to dispense the entire shot into each horse? (I believe each vaccination is 3ml...I will have to double check on that one)
If it came already in a syringe with a needle, then it is a single, dose, so yes, insert all of the liquid.
  • Can you also deworm and vaccinate in the same day (both healthy horses that are UTD on shots and worming)
Yes, you CAN vaccinate and deworm on the same day, but I normally don't on a new horse, because if there is a reaction, you cannot narrow it down as easily what the reaction is from, so that you can avoid it in the future. If you have owned them for a while and are pretty sure there won't be a reaction (no previous reaction), you can do it all in one day.
Also, if you are doing a vaccine that the horse has never had, do it separately.
And, if you horse is prone to colic, I would not deworm on the same day as vaccinations...

ETA: TIP! It seems to be less painful for my horses if I take the needle off of the syringe, slap the neck a few times, insert the needle, and then reattach the syringe to the needle while it is still in the horse, then dispense the vaccine. They don't even flinch if I do it this way, where if I jab with the syringe, they really react.

About half way down the side of my horse's neck is where I give them, right in the muscle. You probably have a single dose syringe so each horse get's their own syringe and needle. Wipe the area with alchohol, remove the needle from the syringe, slap your horse's neck a few times then stick in the needle, about 1/2-3/4 of the length. Hold the needle firmly and put the syringe back on, draw back on the plunger to make sure you're not in a vein and, if you don't draw back any blood, push the plunger in then withdraw the whole thing. As you are taking out the needle press your finger onto the injection site for a few moments. If you draw back blood, remove the needle and try again. I also deworm my horses at the same time but give them a day or two off.
