Broken/injured fetlock

I was at an auction last week and even though I was trying to sit on my hands, I could NOT let this filly go to the meat buyer... I'm sure everyone here understands how that goes

Only when we picked her up, we realized that she has a crippled hind fetlock. It appears that her mom must have stepped on her leg when she was born.

Filly (she dosen't have a name yet) is 100% sound on that leg and dances & prances around like nothing had ever happend.

Most of the weight is on the outside of her hoof though but since she's not halter broke yet, we had no chance to further inspect her leg.

Has anyone ever dealt with such an injury? Is there hope we can straighten this leg out by splinting or bracing it? She's only about 3 months old and we hope there's something that can be done for her still.

Yes, I will consult a vet but as long as she's not halter broke (we have two sessions in already but until she relaxes some more, we don't want to fuss with her legs just yet.)

This is not the best picture but the best I could do for now... I will try to get some better ones soon.
If you look at her leg straight from the back, the hoof is about 1 - 2" off the normal position.
When looked at from the side, you don't even notice it and like I said earlyer, she totally sound on it (that's why we didn't even notice it when she was in the ring)

Any help and/or input would be greatly appriciated!

Look at that butt!! Isn't she a cutie?

Xray needed to evaluate it-when you can get her there.

Yep, pictures are not real clear about the injury. Need All four side views.

What is great is that she appears sound as a dollar on it...long term will tell you.

i would have it X-rayed to be safe and make sure that it isn't still a possible injury.

She could have been born like that or stepped on or indeed yes an injury, hard to tell.
I have rehabed one from a fractured fetlock, and yes now 8 years later he is sound without any evidence of his injury.

It may not be a past injury could be week tendon or any number of things. I say take her into your vet and have them do x-rays figure ouit the cause then run with it from there. But wow she is a stunner, I can see why you could not pass her by! Best of luck hope it is something that can be rectified!

The pic is hard to see. But she looks like she would be worth sticking some money into to see if she is fixable!!! She is very nice looking and I for one would not have been able to pass either!!!! Get her halter broke, and get her into the vet. The sooner the better!!!

What a doll! I have no opinion here just wanted to share how adorable I thought she was & I too wouldn't have passed on her either I hope the other HT'ers ideas help you out a bit here & that she remains sound on it as she grows.

I will defnitely get better photos this weekend (also some conformation shots) and try to get her to the vet for x-rays as soon as possible. Fingers are crossed it can be fixed! She's really well built and I just love her darling face!

I too think she's worth the effort & money! It was sad enough to see her mom go to the meat buyer but we just coudn't take them all home...

I agree with everyone else, get x-rays as soon as possible. A friend of mine at work just had surgery done on a colt due to joint damage. Unfortunately it was not successful because once they got in there they decided his bones has fused to much because he was already getting too old to correct the issue. So if there is a chance to save her by splinting or even surgery, best it gets done as young as possible.

She is a cutie!

I agree with those saying to call the vet and get xrays ...

She is too cute and I have to say I would have had trouble sitting on my hands with her as well

By looking at her big butt, I would say she's a QH
Her mom also looked like a QH but we don't have any papers so god only knows...

Hard to tell from your pictures. Too bad she is a nice filly. Could have dislocated it. We had a gelding with a pastern that looked somehting like that. He was sound on it. Get it xrayed and then you can go frcm there.

I would have to disagree and say that the problem looks like it is in the ankle itself............X-rays the only way to go. Could also be a developemental problem, or congenital OCD or the such.
