Swelling above one eye -- causes?

I just noticed this morning that my 5YO mare has pretty bad swelling above her left eye (instead of the standard "hollow" above that eye, she has a pretty good size soft spongy golf ball sized lump). I have noticed that her eyes have been watering for the past couple days, and her left one is showing some red color in the whites. I checked for scratches on the cornea and didn't see anything and she doesn't seem to mind having her eye or eyelid messed with. She doesn't seem to like having the lump touched though.

I checked to see if there was any indication of a bug bite and saw nothing. I'm concerned because of the tears/runny eyes she has had (and it's not flies as we don't have any) and the redness. Could it be allergies to dust or pollen? Something else?

I sounds to me like her sinus cavity is clogged, due to allergies or something else. Anything dealing with the eyes, I like to have the vet out...

You're probably right. I'll call the vet in the morning. I really thought I was going to make it this entire summer with no vet visits... what was I thinking?

Yes sounds like allergies or some sort of congestion

she could also have bonked her noggin to which could explain the lump

or could be a combination of allergies and a bonk to the head to be safe I'd have the vet out

I had the vet out for an eye issue myself this afternoon, so I asked her about it, and she said you should definitely have a vet out. She named lots of things it could be, and none of them sounded like you should just wait it out.

Thanks! This is why I love HT.

Even though her eye was much better this morning, I don't like the watering, so I'm setting up a visit ASAP.

My vet just returned my call. Based on my description, she thinks it is allergies and wants me to give her 500mg Benadryl twice/day for two days to see if that helps. So it's off to the drug store...

My old broodmares eye sweels up a time or 2 through the year. Normally alergies or something that gets in there. I use the same eye flush that you would use to rinse stuff out of your eye. Works well and the swelling goes down in about 12-24 hours after doing it a time or 2.
