Fly Control ?????

I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a way to control flies in horses and cattle wthout using pesticides or anything like that???? Our farm is Organic so we can not use anything that is not natural . Ive looked into those licks that you put in the pasture , its called "Crystalyx" , and they have a fly control additive to it , but cannot be used for organic farming. There is one for horses also, but the protein content is very high , 20%, and the selenium in there is higher also . I already feed a grain ration with added selenium so cant use the lick. Ive heard of these things you can buy in the spring that control flies naturally. You put them in the manure pile and it eats the fly eggs. Has anyone ever heard of this ??? Where can I get it?? Thank you !!

We use Fly Eliminators (parasitic wasps) that work on the filth flies -- and they really do work! The face flies that hang around cattle are a problem, but the wasps will help with that (if you have neighbors with horses and or cattle that do not use them, they won't do nearly as much good). And these things need to be put out about one/month, not just in the spring. Check out Arbico Organics -- they have the parasitic wasps as well as lots of other organic solutions to various bug control issues.

We also use Flicks, an all natural fly spray made with lanolin and essential oils. There are many additives that have garlic/vinegar/etc to keep bugs away from horses (like Bug Check) that would be safe for use on an organic farm.

I would recomment using garlic. Its fed to them through there food. I have an uncle that doesnt feed grain so he just sprinkles it on there hay so they can somehow get it into there systems. I'm not sure but I think it takes a few weeks to build up in there system but keeps biting bugs and flys away. this web site sells jars of it and there you can read more about it. . hope this helps!

What Trex said....

This is my third year using Fly Predators. I get mine from Spalding Labs, but they are the same thing. I would go crazy without them! Flys are never a problem around here since we started using them. Cut the population by about 95% (yes, really!)

Here's the link to their website. http://www.spalding-labs.com/

I'm in Michigan and I start them in April and stop them in September. I get 5000 a month, with two double months during the summer, then back to 5000 month. It cost me about $19.00 a month.

Can you use traps? There are the cute little sticky strips, but the jarred traps work really well around stalls.

A very dark building works best. If windows need boarding up, old rugs hung across doorways, etc. the darker the better. Few flies will enter. I use a food grade Konk in the automatic sprayer which makes a huge difference for the few flies that do enter.

Thanks everyone for your advice , I really do appreciate it(and so will the horses and cattle) . Im going to check out all the info given and put it to good use. I have tried using garlic before but could never get the horses to eat it at all . They actually stopped eating their grain if garlic was in it. The Fly Eliminator stuff , I will have to wait till next spring to start on that since the season is almost over. Thanks !!

Just put out the latest shipment of Fly Prediters for the year. They do work very well. Have had to hardly use any fly spray this year.

I have also used fly traps. They do work but seem to attract more flys then they kill. When you use them you really need to put them up away from the barn and horses. I tend to hang them in the pine trees just out side the fence line. Keep the extra flies away from the barn and horses.
