Saddle Sores

What can I use on a horse to help saddle sores heal? Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

I use Furazone spray. I think about anything, though, as long as you keep it clean and dry, and watch for infection. I believe in not riding again until the hair is completely grown in, because the site is still sensitive. And, of course, make changes to your equipment to fix whatever is causing the sore!

Depending on how bad the saddle sores are I would use either a tea tree oil spray or gel form (Animal Legend makes a great one), but if you can't get your hands on that try putting on some MTG (main tail groom). It's great for rubs and will grow the hair back. Make sure to clean the area first with a good quality aniseptic wash before applying anything. Also, it will help if you wash your saddle pad as sometimes it is thick with dirt and sweat from riding often and with cause chaffing in the area. To help prevent future sores from a girth, you can apply a salt-water solution to the healed skin once a day to help toughen the horse's skin. Hope this helps you!

The best is to get a new saddle !!!!!

Like Carri said, keeping to clean and dry is the best. I like Horsemans Dream Aloe Cream for my horses boo-boos.

Good luck !!!!!!!

Sometimes just rubbing a mild hand soap, a bit tacky into the sore helps clean the wound and protects it. When you're done that give the entire area a good massage with your fingers to increase circulation to the area.
When healed, this tissue will now be scar tissue and will not be as strong or elastic as it was before. It could be a year before the sores are healed as well as they will as we don't know the extent of the injury.

I, too, like the HD Aloe Cream for rub sores - keeps the skin soft and moist to encourage hair growth.

If you have an open wound, then I use the furazone gel-like stuff (can't remember the name off the top of my head - black with a yellow cap and writing!).

And like Carrie said, whatever caused the problem to begin with definitely needs to be addressed before we even consider riding them again.

From what I understand the little girls that were riding her before I started leasing her had the cinch up too high on her and it rubbed her. I always stretch her legs before riding her anyway. Thanks for all ya'lls help.

Desitin ointment works well too.
