advice please

This is the first time dealing with a weanling. I talked to the vet and she said to keep her on the mom for about an hr a day.. she is about 5 to 6 mntsn old and is eating hay and grain. she seems unintersted in water. I just want to make sure she is getting all the nutrition she needs. what feed do you all use and should there be any supplements used. we have a grass timothy mix hay. any help would be great. Also any suggestions on the mare she is showing a little rib but kinda has a fat belly. we just got thses 2 horses and lets say they were not showen the best of care but now they will. I was told that both have been wormed but I wonder. should I worm them again or wait untill the next round when we do the others.

Keep hay in front of them both 24/7 ... build their diet around the hay ... look for low or no grain feeds... depending on if they have been getting any grain depends on how you want to feed it ...

Get them bothed dewormed ASAP you can take a fecal to the vet for about $10 and let you know what you are deworming for and which drug would be best to use...

Shots also need to be done pretty soon depending on the condidtion they are in ... talk to your vet on this one

As far as WHAT feeds to fed I cant' suggest that without a zip code to see what is avaiable in your area... I don't like Nutrena, Puriina, Dumor or most "locally" milled feeds they tend to be least cost effective meaning whateve is cheapest on a given days is what is in your feeds Look for fixed formulas that have NO CORN and oats is down a ways on the list

Pics would be a great help

I am happy to feed Nutrena OR Purina. Raised many a nice weanling on free fed coastal/bermuda-Equine Jr and loose minerals.
More recently-with the halter babies..have had great success with Safe Choice,a bit of Beet pulp shreds and about a cup of Ultium a day with alfalfa/grass mix hay.
If your foal is 6 mos old she is not getting nutrition from the milk and seems to be dragging the mare down a bit.
May want to pull her off.
Did the Vet say WHY the filly should still be nursing?
I worm my horses when they need it individually-not so much to get them all on a schedule. You can do that after they are both in good shape.
Like to see a pic of your new ones.

A question I would have as well, unless it is the liquid he is trying to get into her.

Another suggest for added water intake, would be, if she is eating grain see if she will eat it wetted down with water. Sometimes it is the taste of water that is unattractive to them, and working them into it with a wet grain meal can help not only flavor it a bit, but hydrate.
