Swelling in the back hocks

After standing around the round bale when it was not pouring standing in the stalls when it was, I do not think my horse have moved much in the last week. I have 4 of them swollen in the back hocks. I was told it may be caused by the inactivity and standing in a lot of wetness. I let them all out in the big pasture now that is has cleared up so the will walk around and graze and I have seen an improvement already. Anyone else heard of this or have this problem. It affected all ages from my yearling to a 16 year old. None are favoring or seem to be in any pain or discomfort. Farrier was out yesterday and agreed and said not to worry and vet will be out tomorrow (for shots and teeth) so I will have him double check as well if there is any swelling left. Just thought I would ask ya'll in the meantime.

i have heard it called stocking up. My mare does it if she has to stay in a stall very long.

Yep, reduced activity and movement reduces blood flow especially to the legs and feet. Quite common for a bit of pooling to take place. Most reduce the swelling overnight and some may take a little longer. When heat, soreness and tenderness are present is when a deeper concern need be. Having it checked is a good precaution.
