What do you think of her weight?
![]() I will try to get closer pics if you need them, but from this pic, can you see if she is overweight or not? I have had people tell me she is overweight, but some think she is good for a QH. She is 4 yrs old. Do the bloodlines help determine how she should be built too? If so, I will post it.... http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/my+lark+be+a+lady Heres another pic: ![]()

Too ME it looks as if she has a super cresty neck... which is a sign of IR
I agree in the bottom pic she looks great but in the top pic she is too heavy!! Can you get her a grazing muzzle?? and removing all hard feeds is not really teh answer .. you want to find her a fed that helps her utilize what she is getting ... Mag/Ox they say works wonders on the cresty neck and is much cheaper thenmost other products out there and easier to get normally |

my 2-cents worth
as a fellow floridian. grass is feast or famine here. Going into the cooler months (hoping) I would not place her on a diet. what were you feeding her? 10%, 12%
some QH are just plain stocky. I would be concern if she were having any health issues while you were working her. watch that lush green grass right now that is springing up from FAY's presence, can be very high in sugar. My olde mare had some health issues related to the grass when hurricane charlie blew thru.

April I think she looks fine. Little chubbie in the first pic but she is at a good weight considering fall is coming. My red mare is an absolute balloon right now with all the grass and not much saddle time, but I am happy to see her like that than under weight. Keep up the good work, will try to catch up with you at one of the SSBC shows.

Just my tidbit on the subject, I think she could use some definition, If you remove her from pasture during those peak hours(11-4pm) you will notice a big difference. The grass is full of Sugars during the Photosynthesis process. I read that in Horse & Rider.

I think she's BEAUTIFUL, and as well, really nicely bred.
BUT, I think she's a tad too chunky in the first picture. Here's the thing, most QH tend to be easy keepers. Her neck looks a little cresty, and if you try to move it and it's tight, not loose feeling, so that you can move it back and forth, she's probably VERGING on too heavy. Also look at the area above her tail, on the rump, fat will deposit there too, and if she has an actual crease down her back, she's probably getting too heavy. Those are all indicators that she's getting plenty of groceries. If you let her get to heavy, QH's are more at risk for founder/laminities, which can lead to chroinc foot problems, abccesses, soreness, too much weight on small feet, etc. Also, too much weight can affect her athleticism, harder on heart, etc. I have an easy keep QH gelding, and I am CONSTANTLY on a vigil to not let him get to heavy. It will, and has, caused him to have the above mentioned problems, and I tend to be on a constant watch with him. Oft times he does fine on grass and good hay, with MINIMAL amounts of grain ONLY during the colder months, or as my pasture declines in the fall, and if he is on a regular riding schedule. Be especially diligent since she is on 24/7 turn out..., SHE'S getting plenty to eat during that time. And also someone mentioned the lushness of the grass after a lot of rain, thats when my horse will have a tendency to BALLOON up over night almost. She looks like a very nice girl. Redboy |
