What do you think of her weight?

I will try to get closer pics if you need them, but from this pic, can you see if she is overweight or not? I have had people tell me she is overweight, but some think she is good for a QH. She is 4 yrs old.

Do the bloodlines help determine how she should be built too? If so, I will post it....

I have a 4 year old gelding and he is about the same size...i dont consider that heavy. Your horse's weight looks pretty good for a Quarter Horse...remember, Quarter Horses are supposed to be stocky, so I think she looks very good...other people may have different opinions but for a Quarter Horse she is fine.

From those pics, she does not look overweight to me. She looks good. She just looks like a stocky QH.

Borderline for me, and I only say that because of how young she still is...I would probably take her down about 40-50 pounds by reducing her grain slightly and a bit more exercise for her topline.

You know, I don't know squat, but she does look a tad bit 'over'. I say that because I personally like more muscle definition, and this might not be a case of 'over' at all, but perhaps just a bit of conditioning is needed. And again, I tend to like muscles, so I might be biased.

But we are coming into winter, and I'm not sure that I'd worry too much right now. She might need that weight to get through winter fine, so I'd say for now not to be too concerned.

Just my opinion, and you know what that's worth...nothing in today's economy.

Best-
Noni

I think she looks like a stocky QH too...but you could take a little off and not kill her.

Yeah we've already cut her off grain and hay, and she is on 24/7 grass. With the rain here from the tropical storm, the grass is so rich, she is just gaining real quick. I am thinking of maybe we could put her in the sand paddocks for half the day to maybe get some weight off. She is worked for about an hour, about 4 days a week(more or less depending on schedules/weather).

Top pic she looks pretty cresty in her neck... this months issue of equus has an article on body condition scoring, neck crest, and height:weight ratio that would probably help.

I agree - top pic she looks like she could use a little diet but I like her weight in the bottom picture. She's kinda lacking some definition so it may make her look a little rounder, but I wouldn't want her any lighter than in the bottom pic especially if she were in a heavier work load.

I have to agree with the last few posts. Was there a time difference in between the pictures? In the bottom one she looks great, just a litle more muscle and conditioning needed.

And woohoo! You're only the 2nd HT member I've come across who also shows at Silver Sands. I'm 99.9% certain that's where you are in your avatar and the bottom pic. If not, then somebody please get me a new contact prescription.

Im no expert but the top pic looks like her neck is a little cresty. I use a great supplement for my horse for cresty necks. Its on Smartpak.com (QUIESSENCE) I reduced grain but didnt cut it out and he is on a lower T and A. (Lower protein).
Pretty horse though!!! I would love to have that arena to ride in

Yep! We are regulars at SSBC. We go to the Open shows every month. Its a nice place to go, and we really arent that far from there. I will be there on English days now since the one I rode before is western, and the one I am riding now is english...

Too ME it looks as if she has a super cresty neck... which is a sign of IR

I agree in the bottom pic she looks great but in the top pic she is too heavy!! Can you get her a grazing muzzle?? and removing all hard feeds is not really teh answer .. you want to find her a fed that helps her utilize what she is getting ... Mag/Ox they say works wonders on the cresty neck and is much cheaper thenmost other products out there and easier to get normally

my 2-cents worth

as a fellow floridian. grass is feast or famine here. Going into the cooler months (hoping) I would not place her on a diet. what were you feeding her? 10%, 12%
some QH are just plain stocky. I would be concern if she were having any health issues while you were working her.

watch that lush green grass right now that is springing up from FAY's presence, can be very high in sugar. My olde mare had some health issues related to the grass when hurricane charlie blew thru.

April I think she looks fine. Little chubbie in the first pic but she is at a good weight considering fall is coming. My red mare is an absolute balloon right now with all the grass and not much saddle time, but I am happy to see her like that than under weight. Keep up the good work, will try to catch up with you at one of the SSBC shows.

Just my tidbit on the subject, I think she could use some definition, If you remove her from pasture during those peak hours(11-4pm) you will notice a big difference. The grass is full of Sugars during the Photosynthesis process. I read that in Horse & Rider.

Personally I think Elle looks great right where she is at. She doesnt need to gain or lose to me.

One day I will make it back out to SSBC to show. One day. I really need to take Dezirae out there. But shame on me for not doing it.

I think she's BEAUTIFUL, and as well, really nicely bred.
BUT, I think she's a tad too chunky in the first picture.
Here's the thing, most QH tend to be easy keepers. Her neck looks a little cresty, and if you try to move it and it's tight, not loose feeling, so that you can move it back and forth, she's probably VERGING on too heavy.
Also look at the area above her tail, on the rump, fat will deposit there too, and if she has an actual crease down her back, she's probably getting too heavy. Those are all indicators that she's getting plenty of groceries.
If you let her get to heavy, QH's are more at risk for founder/laminities, which can lead to chroinc foot problems, abccesses, soreness, too much weight on small feet, etc. Also, too much weight can affect her athleticism, harder on heart, etc.
I have an easy keep QH gelding, and I am CONSTANTLY on a vigil to not let him get to heavy. It will, and has, caused him to have the above mentioned problems, and I tend to be on a constant watch with him.
Oft times he does fine on grass and good hay, with MINIMAL amounts of grain ONLY during the colder months, or as my pasture declines in the fall, and if he is on a regular riding schedule.
Be especially diligent since she is on 24/7 turn out..., SHE'S getting plenty to eat during that time. And also someone mentioned the lushness of the grass after a lot of rain, thats when my horse will have a tendency to BALLOON up over night almost.
She looks like a very nice girl. Redboy
