I know it is a little late at this point, but there is a way that that could have been stitched from the beginning (and maybe still now) without the stitches tearing out. The vet I used to work for did it all the time, and it worked so well I got REALLY aggravated when another vet didn't know how to do it!
Anyway, I can't draw and take a pic right now, but first the vet would clean and debride the wound. Then, put a vertical penrose drain (rubber tube) in the wound and stitch it in top and bottom, so it could be flushed. Then sew the laceration itself. Then, put in "tension sutures" which is essentially 2 big stitches that ran under the skin, simlar to lacing a shoe. He would go at least 1-1 1/2" past each side of the lac, then when he pulled it snug and tied it off, it would take pressure off the original wound. After about 7 days he would take out the tension sutures and the drain, then 7 days later the main stitches. Worked GREAT.

Our yearling filly got loose one night and ended up skidding on the concrete barn floor, lost her footing and slid on her elbow. It peeled the skin right back and was a mess. Called the vet who came out and stitched it then we confined the filly to her stall. Needless to say she opened it back up while she was getting up one morning. Ended up flushing it 2X a day with betadine/saline solution and packing it with furacin per the vet's orders. Of course that melted down her leg in 5 minutes so I decided to spray it with Furall which worked great. So I ended up scrubbing the wound every day with betadine scrub, flush with betadine/saline, dry with clean paper towel and spray with furall. A dab or 2 of Swat around the edges kept the flies away and she healed so quickly it was amazing! The vet gave me some powder to combat the proud flesh so I used that once the wound healed from the inside out. Your baby's wound looks bad but it will heal and you'll never know it happened.

Just a quick update -- and I promise to post a few new pictures tomorrow. The cut is looking so-o-o-o much better. It is healing up nicely. The swelling has gone down and his chest looks fairly "normal" except for the cut. He's managed to rub a lot of the hair off from around the edges because it is "itchy". Have been applying Underwoods at least 2 x/day and more if I can get out there more often.
I really thought this would take months to heal, but it has been 10 days and I can see so much improvement already . . . . I just hope it heals before the snow flies and hair grows back. |

so my vet says for ugly nasty wound care:
shave area, betadine scrub well, tetnus booster, sugardine(gran sugar betadine and saline mixed into a paste) daily, rinse in between applications w/ dilute betadine (tea-colored)and anti-b's. after about a week when tissue slime appears start wonder dust to prevent proud flesh. keep covered if poss til good healing gets underway usually 3wks depending on severity. |

Here is an updated picture -- 12 days after. I have been spraying Underwoods on it 2 x/day and watching it for signs of infection. He will receive his 2nd set of shots on the 1st of Sept., including tetnus, so I am not worried there. He had his first round of shots on the 1st of August and was gelded on the 6th of August, so he did have a shot of antibiotics then (which had probably worn off by the time he cut himself
). Anyhow -- here is how it looks today:![]() ![]() If you go back and look at the 1st pictures -- you can see that the swelling has gone down and the cut is looking smaller and not as deep (phew!!). Now do you think any of this happening has cured him of his fiesty little attitude -- of course not. I can see lots of fighting with this little guy in the future. He's not afraid of anything and has a lot of spunk. He's gonna be my wild child!! ![]() |

Wow, that is healing so beautifully...good job Mom!
A little Preperation H around the none open (unhealed) edges, will help soften and really reduce skin inflammation and any scaring. Helps with hair growth as well. I bet the only time once healed, you will see if is if he is clipped close.

And thank you PeggySue for all your PM's about Underwood's!! I am so pleased with how this has healed. I really thought it would take months and it has been 3 weeks and is looking so much better than I hoped. There's even a bit of hair starting to grow back in the area as well. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that he will stay injury free for the rest of his days
because I can only take one injury per horse ![]() |
