Anyone feed complete feed? Feed link added!

Does anyone on here feed Purina Horse Chow? How do you like it? I'm transitioning to it now and want to get some feedback. I don't usually use complete feed but with pastures and hay getting low I figured I would take the chance to save some money on my hay bill. Does anyone else recommend another brand of complete feed?

I do, always have and do so with feeding hay. Of course, my guys only get a small amount of grain but it is just enough. Saves on having to use excess supplements, and in the long run more cost effecient.

I use Equine Adult for the two I have now. For the crew you have, given age and breeds, and if you are looking to keep it simple, (ie. a one for all feed), I would personally recommend Purina Ultium. And, I think you will find that you are going to feed alot less as well.

Thanks, I'll check into the ultium. Between the four of them they get about 2/3's of a bale of hay a day. So I haven't cut hay out all together and don't intend to, I just want to cut back if I can. They are also on 24hr pasture which is still decent but probably won't be in a month

I feed Purina Equine Senior and Equine Adult complete feeds.
I also recommend Ultium. It's a great feed but is not a complete feed. It is high in fiber but you still need to feed hay with it.

You are correct Calicocagirl, and Thanks, as I had forgotten, even though it has (beet pulp) which on its own, can be used to replace less than 50% of a horses diet...It does not contain chopped forage like Equine Junior, Equine Adult and Equine Senior.

Our local purina dealer carries the Equine Senior, but not the Equine adult. They will order it for me, but I have to buy the whole pallet if I went that route.

I really like the equine senior. It has done real well for me and I know I feed alot less than I would have to with another feed.

The Equine Senior is pelleted correct? I'd have to mix a lil extra textured/sweet in with it. 2 of my horses will eat cardboard, but 2 are picky and shun pellets

I believe the biggest difference you will find between the Equine Adult and Equine Senior is protein, fat and fiber.

Equine Senior is higher protein by I believe 2%, higher fat by about the same, and a little higher fiber.

Yes, it is a pelleted feed. But I would try it first without the sweet feed...It is highly digestable, easily chewed and with the added ingredients most find it tasty.

It is a pellet, and I have one picky mare but she'll eat it. Won't eat any other pelleted feed, but all of them love this stuff.

I use the Equine Senior for Hickory that needs to keep weight on. I also add alittle Ultium. He will be on all Ultium in the next month or so. I just like the extra fiber for the winter.
I use the Equine Adult for Willy that just needs a maintenance feed.
If you have an easy keeper, Equine Adult is great.

We use Equine Senior for most of our horses as well - that is their grain ration.. along with hay, and some beet pulp.. calf manna for nursing mares and weanlings.. They all seem to do very well with that mix..

I used to feed Blue Seal Trotter and it was a good feed. It can be fed as a regular and a complete so when hay gets better you don't have to do much switching around.

One nice thing is you will notice smaller and less poo!!!

Now I do have a local feed store that I like to do business with if possible. They aren't a purina dealer but do carry a textured and pelleted senior feed. The %'s are pretty close to equal with the Purina Senior. I will probably be getting their brand because thats where I get my feed and have an account etc. It's a different brand but should be ok?? Right?

Not necessarily equal.

Have to agree with Calico on this one. I have tried other senior feeds and just haven't done as well with them as Purina. It is kinda an inconvenience for me, as I have to go to a particular store, but I really like the quality alot better.

We have tried others and were not as happy with them as the purina senior feed.. adding 1/2 cup of calf manna and one large coffee can of beet bulp seems to be the magic mix for our herd.. If you can, buy one bag and take the content label to the feed store to compare. What I like about the purina is the mix of trace minerals in it that are not always in the others..
