Pulled Shoulder Muscle....

Okay guys, I need some advice. My friend's horse is 8 years old, and 17.2hh. He is a Shire/TB. For the last 4 months, he has been off with a pulled shoulder muscle, that once healed but it ceased (sp?) up... he also had a pulled chest muscle, which has been taken care of. My friend has a certain equine chiropractor who looks at him, and he is the one who says its the shoulder muscle pulled. It's been 4 months though..... sometimes he is okay, other times he is not... he is on stall rest, was been lightly ridden until about a week ago. He has had ice gel used, a messager used on him to release the muscles "knot". My friend is now using a hair dryer to warm it up, then message it out... but this takes a lot of work, a lot of pressure, and 2x daily EVERYDAY just to relax it... any other suggestions?

I'd use a good liniment brace on it, massage it, do some hand walking and some easy flexing/stretching of the leg and shoulder to help free it up. Has the vet been out? There are many different types of injectables that will help loosen a stiff muscle.

I would get a second opinion. There may be more to it than just a pulled muscle. I would also evaluate what he is being fed; he may need suppliments to help with the muscle healing.

Is he turned out?

Sorry I havne't replied.. was working and very busy!

I agree though, I want her to get a second opinion.. he is not turned out now no... he's on stall rest. He was turned out, and privately... the problem is, when he goes out he gets happy and excited and runs around bucking... and then he injures himself again....

Always check w/the Vet first then....

get a Massage Therapist out just to make sure that the massaging is done correctly...not sure if the person was one?

if you get a Massage Therapist out, they can show you things to do in between to help the horse.

I would not use a hair dryer but other methods of heat that the therapist can show you.
