What makes a feed a "Complete" feed?

This stems from another thread. What is the difference in a "complete" feed and other feeds? I feed Safechoice and thought it was a complete feed - but I don't know why

Complete meaning includes lots of forage in addition to grain products. Can be fed without hay and pasture if/when necessary, and horse will get everything they need from the feed. It's "complete." Also is balanced for vitamins and minerals when fed as the only feed a horse receives.

I would not consider safechoice a complete feed.

Complete feeds have enough fiber that you don't have to feed hay. Just because a feed is high in fiber doesn't mean it is a complete feed though.

The ones I know of are the ones Purina carries..
Complete Advantage
Horse Chow
Horseman's Edge 14 Complete
Equine Senior
Equine Adult

A complete feed to me is one where that is the only type of grain that needs to be fed. It contains all the vitamins and minerals a horse needs. Hay and salt can be provided as well but hay isn't always necessary. Triple crown, Legends, and Blue seal have excellent complete feeds.

As most larger feed companies make there own version of complete feed, it is important to know all the facts and decide what is right for your situation and horse.

Below is a good article which addresses most of what should be considered:

We used Purina's Horse Chow until the dealers in our area closed.
Now we use Alfa-12 Nuggets made by Martindale Feed Mill.
The feed has a lot of fiber.

Crude Protein, Min 12.00
Crude Fat, Min 4.00
Crude Fiber, Mac 25.00
Calcium, Min 0.70
Calcium, Max 1.00
Phosphorus, Min 0.40
Copper, Min (ppm) 20.00
Zinc, Min (ppm) 60.00
Selenium, Min (ppm) 0.30
Vitamin A, Min (IU/lb) 4,000

No Strategy is NOT a complete feed. It does not have enough fiber and is made to be fed with hay. It is a VERY good balanced feed for a variety of horses. One of my favorite feeds. You need to provide alot more fiber in the horses diet with Strategy than if you were feeding a complete feed like one of the other Purina products I listed.

I would just look at the labels or ask for a line of their complete feeds.
