Foal Heat Questions

Hello Gurus!

Twelve days ago, we were blessed with our beautiful little mini baby, "Peaches". Peaches is doing really well. Yesterday, I noticed that her Momma ("Poco") was in her foal heat. Today, I came home to see that Peaches has diarrhea. Since I am a pretty new horse owner, I panicked. I started searching the internet, and read that "foal heat diarrhea" is common and usually not a problem.

Is there anything special I should be doing for Peaches?

Also, their pasture mate (my 5 yo QH) is also suddenly in heat. I was riding her tonight and she was being very stubborn. On a whim, I lifted her tail and, wouldn't you know it, she was in heat. Can another mare's foal heat bring a pasture mate into heat??

Thanks for your suggestions ...

Kristi

Congrats on the foal!!!..

Not much you really can do. You can give the foal a few tablespoons of Caopectate or Peptobismal each day to help with the diarrhea...wash her bum with warm water and gently dry it off and put on some vaseline.

Baby has the diarrhea because of the foal heat...mom's milk is rich during foal heat.

And just keep a watch on baby to make sure she is drinking enough and doesn't become dehydrated.

Probios!

It's not the foal heat that causing the problem as used to be the thought. It's the foal's tummy readjusting and getting ready for grass and grain in addition to mama's milk.

Also, I don't see why a pasture mate's heat couldn't bring another mare into heat. Human woman who live together often have the same cycle.

For foal heat scours I tried giving yogurt this year (to the foal) to see if it would help....it worked great!

Foal scoars (sp) I always use human baby diaper rash ointment, it tends to absorb better on the skin and it stays on longer...

Yes indeed Probios.
We give foals a dose by weight on day one and day five and no more foal scours.
It gets their tummies on track with the proper levels of intestinal flora.

Thanks, everyone! The scours only lasted a day and the baby is back to normal now.

The mares (both in heat) are still grouchy, though ...
