Had the mare had her Pnuemabort shots? That is the timeframe for late term abortions from that too.
There are so many possibilities and it just tears your heart out to lose one so close to delivery

For the most part I think horses are vaccinated...Just not during pregnancy

Mine have always been vaccinated but from what we went thru on the last foal I choose not to vaccinate during pregnancy

Maybe I am wrong here but I was told that they only get vaccinated for West Nile once a year after the initial first shot and the booster 3 weeks later?????

Now my mare gets and my others when I had them would get wormed every 3 months adn I would change off Starting with Quest then 3 months later Zimectrin and every 3 months switch off between the 2 brands. Her coggins she gets every year in August. The other shots she gets on a regular basis every 4 months I believe that is the schedule she is on currently I am not exactly sure beings I am away from her and have been for 2 years due to being stationed in Germany. Her feet are done every 8 weeks. Now If I should do more than that Someone please tell me because I dont know. The schedule she is on works for her since she isnt shown or traveling currently according to my vet. But all vets do have different opinions
Hopefully I am doing the right thing and making the right choices

That is what my vet told me, once a year after the initial one and booster in 3 weeks.

It depends on your mosquito problem in your specific area.
I do it twice a year because we have skeeters year round and we do have the kind that carry WNV
Since Rita and Katrina last year-there are tons of dead trees and water sources and there are tons of them out already.

yes T-mom I can imagine what the skeeters are like after the hurricans last year We are desperatly trying to get stationed in Colorado Springs Not sure what the skeeter situtation is there but in Eastern Washinton we hadnt had a big problem with them. Now my parents are in Texas and my mom says they are very bad now in her area. my mare has so far had teh first initial shot another 3 weeks alter and then 1 a year after that I knwo this because the ranch sends me the copies of her records so I can keep tract of it and anything she needswhen she was pregnant she had the west nile shot at 30 days pregnant she did loose the foal at 9 months I can not prove this was indeed from the shot but as someone said before alot of dead babies and aborted foals and deformed foals arrived after the horses at teh ranch were giving the West Nile shots. Our vet said It COULD very well have been from the shots but who knows. My mare will have the shot again this year becasue I was told she has to have it to be able to Travel to our new duty station and the Army post vet clinics require it as well

I cant say yea or nay on it, just weird that would happen and the other cases I have been told and expereinced after the shot.

Its one of those things you just wonder.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the vaccine could not possibly cause congenital deformities if given early in pregnancy. What I do know is that internal organs and the skeletal system of the foal is in place by Day 50, and by Day 80, the soles and frogs of the hooves are developed.

Also, I am not saying that the vaccine could not affect the placenta in some way, and cause abortion. I just find it highly unlikely that a vaccination given at 8 months could cause deformities.

I am no expert though, and will be interested to see what happens with the WNV in the future!
