ToveroMom is right, too much Show Sheen is worse than not using it at all. Good grooming habits and good nutrition make good skin and coat conditions, not a bottle.
Make sure that the things Beth55051 mentioned are taken care of: teeth, parasites, and good nutrition. From there, if those are good, then, look at supplements. Two things to remember as well... First, you are in the winter months, and almost every horse is going to be thick and shaggy, not sleek and shiny, unless you blanket from head to toe, clip them, or keep them in a climate controlled facility 24/7. Second, no supplement is an immediate cure-all. It takes time to see major improvements. So while everyone may suggest what they're "secret for great hair" is, it won't fix it by tomorrow. Having said that: We add rice bran, it does wonders for weight, AND a great haircoat. It took about a month to see major differences. My girls have sleek shiny coats in summer, and even with them trying to grow a winter coat, they still gleam. Both horses have had 3-5 inches of mane growth since July. Strawberry's added about 6 inches to her tail. (Lily's already hit the ground.)
