Please tell me about Calf Manna

When I was young my Mom always fed our horses Calf Manna in the winter along with rolled barley. She swore by the Calf Manna for keeping weight on them. Now I have a very thin older gelding that needs to gain a few hundred pounds and am wondering if Calf Manna would be a good choice for him? It is about to turn very cold up here and he is going to need alot of help. What are your experiences with Calf Manna and why would you say yes or no to it?

I've never used it, but I know people use it and have good results with it.

Yep.. I know someone that uses it for her harder keeping/working appendix and her older mare.. works great for her and the horses love it.

We've used Calf Manna off and on for 20+ years. It has vitamins and minerals that may be in short supply in some areas, including selenium and zinc. It's a reasonably priced supplement that can be added to grain or fed straight. There have been studies done that show many young horses are deficient in Zinc. The studies are finding there is a relationship between OCD and DOD horses that have zinc deficiencies. You don't feed more than 1-1/2 pounds per day. It's in a pelleted form and the horses seem to love the taste.

It's not a weight builder but may help insure you horse is getting nutrients it needs to stay in good shape.
