I am wanting to switch to a senior feed, any feed back?

I have a 21 year old appendix mare that needs the calories, I was told that I f I feed a sr. feed I wont have to feed her the extra sr. sups and probiotic's. She is a big girl and an average keeper I just don't want her to loose any weight switching feeds. She is currently on a 12% protein and a 7% fat ( supper horse).

what age should you switch to a sr. how young is too young?

I would recommend Seminole Senior. Since you are in Florida, you should be able to find it there. They only ship in the southeast. It is an awesome feed. I have switched all my horses over to Seminole, and it was the best thing I could have done.

I agree, I love the Seminole feeds. A horse is only as old as you make them out to be... What made you think she needs the senior feed over what she is already eating? I know a 37yr old horse that is STILL eating the same feed since he was 9! And he is in great shape.

Just because she would be on senior feed would not mean that she wouldnt still need extra supplements. As always, for the best advice, ask your local vet who has experience and knows your mare. The both of you could make a better decision than what we could tell you.

I had my 20 something guy on senior feed and it was too rich in protein for him. His urine was so concentrated. That's something else to think about.
