My guess would be about 18-20.
But check this site for some info. on the groove. It is not always accurate though.
I have heard of people feeling horses ribs to tell age. A new farrier I just used tried this on my horse and mule. He did come up with the correct ages. I can't find alot of info. on it anywhere. There are a couple things on Google and I saw it on another horse forum but everyone there said that was just crazy.

Good lord, I hope he's not that old.

It's funny, the "average" age people have told me is eight to eleven. The youngest age has been six.

I really hope he's not 20, lol.

The people who sold him to my friend said he was twelve. The people who she sold him to, said their vet said he was eleven.

The Groove is a good place to start but not completely reliable. One must look in the lower incisors for the cups (young horse) the slope of the front teeth, body condition, frosting above the eyes (depending on color). Usually that much tarter on teeth indicates a horse in it's teens but feed and water can have a bearing on that. A friend owns a 23 yr old mare that she's had for years and all other indicators suggest she's around that age, yet her Groove indicates she's 14.
