Please just keep him in your prayers tonight that he is indeed improved and has passed whatever was caught in there(if there was something?) Im just concerned on what the hell was going on with him. Maybe the fluids they pumped into his stomach helped? I dont know...im still pretty worried....but thats the update...and thats all I know right now...what are your guy's thoughts? Maybe Im just a worry wart...but after losing Sweetie the way I did this was a da sha voo...I was/still am freaking out so bad...All I could say is 'I cant do this again'... But, at least hes in professional hands(persay...they are not exactly going to be there all night)
That's good news!!
You have to just relax and trust in your vet.
If you feel uncertain, then express this to him when you pick up Black Jack.
Ask every and ALL questions you need answers to, or have uncertainty about, (even write them down if necessary, and write out the answer).

Make sure that you know exactly what your vet wants you to do for Black Jack, if a reoccurrence should happen, when he gets home.

And have the proper medications on hand, especially since your vet is an hour away.

Do your best to remain calm, I know how scary colic can be, but also remember that not everything is within our control,..,
All you can do is, be prepared as best you can, to handle the events as they occur.

Take care of you, and your Black Jack.

Very best wishes for a speedy recovery to Black Jack,..,
And Excellent Job (!!) on your part, for doing ALL within your power, and as quickly as you could, to help him!!

Hopeing all is well this am with BJ. with the weather change alot of horses are colicking according to my vet, change of weather and change of food,
I keep banamine here and as soon as I see a horse that is a little uncomfortable from gas I shoot em up. as per vet instructions, which I do call and ask every time.

That's good news! Do you think he may have eaten a toxic/poisonous plant? Those necks can get a looong way through the fence. Just a thought.

Thumbs up ~am Update~

Well...We got a call just now...saying Black Jack is fully recovered They counted 8 piles of poop. Hes alot perkier and hes eating and drinking...

dunamovin-we have electric wire and they never are able to put their head through the fence...so the only thing he at was his morning hay we gave him....
We just took him off pasture about a week ago...is it because we are feeding twice a day and he was used to eating all the grass he wanted? We have never had that problem before though...and Sweetie coliced while she was on pasture Im still trying to figure out what happened with him...as we still have my Tilly and Monkey here. Im worried sick about them now...and about getting black jack home...and this reoccuring I guess Ill talk to the vet and see what he thinks. Im def going to get some batamine! Has anyone ever had a horse colic and you gave them a shot of batamine and they came out of it on thier own? Colic is such a scary thing! Im sure glad our boy is okay though! Im just worried about the others....I just dont get what would have caused it

Good luck bringing him home, that is good news that he is ok. yes a change in diet does it most times. when switching from pasture to hay start giving hay about two weeks before total switch.
and I have had horses come out of colic with a shot of banamine, no food, just water for 5-6 hours, and I squirt mineral oil into their mouths with a large syringe, or even pepto bismal, shot dosage as suggested by vet because i give a heads up call than a call to say all clear or come running.

Well we got him home...he isnt looking the best still though IMO. Hes just not himself. He almost looks like hes doped up still. I donno...he cant really be...as the last shot of batamine(a injection) was yesterday at 5pm...so I donno. He must just not feel good still. But, we have him home and the vet said to just give him little portions of hay today. Ill be keeping a close eye on him. The farrier is coming today too...so...hopefully he will do okay with his feet even though he isnt feeling good. Poor guy Here he is with mom.

I'm glad he is home and feeling better. My horse got choked a couple of weeks ago and didn't have very many signs of choke, but colic instead. He was down constantly and rolling. We tried to walk him, but he kept going down. We loaded him up and took him to the vet and while in the trailer he managed to relax a little and pass...it was an alfalfa cube...on the way there. The vet thinks it was suck right in the opening of his throat. That's why he wasn't drooling or anything. Do you think your boy could have choke on some hay or something?

I used to work for a guy that did pony rides... we were at a seafood festival and had a pony colic when we got there he was down. I walked him around and a friend went to the vet for some banamine. We gave him the injection and walked him for about an hour and a half and he started feeling better then he finally pooped and he was calling for the other ponies and was back to himself. I don't think it was a bad case but he kept trying to lay down before we gave him the injection.

Well he did good for the farrier...kinda laid on the guy though Hes just not himself today. Hes still carrying his head really low and just acting really out of it/lazy. Hes a really mellow horse anyway...and is a slow walker usually...but not like this. I dont know. He seems to be doing alil better now. He was trotting around his corral just a lil bit ago....I guess Ill just keep a eye on him. I talked to a vet at the place(they have like 3 equine vets) and she said I could have gave him a shot of bute when he was here in so much pain! But when I called there at the time the lady(dont know who) told me to NOT give him bute So, the poor boy had to suffer the whole way up there. I did get some batamine now though! So, Ill be ready the next time...I dont know if I will be emotionally(I FREAK OUT when it comes to my babies) but atleast Ill have the meds here now Thanks for all your support! You guys are the best!

boo_loves_kitty- I dont think he choked...because the vet put a tube down his throat into his stomach and it didnt get caught on anything and nothing came out of the tube either...I dont know. Im still wondering what happened....I think it may have been the change from pasture to hay...because the pasture they were on was REALLY wet and then switching him to dry grass hay...it may have caused a impaction in there? Possibly? I donno...you would think it would have happened the first couple days of him being here if that was the case? Not sure....but Im going to do what 'horselady' said give them hay for a few days before we take them off of pasture...we just never had this happen before due to taking them off of pasture...but it does make sense I suppose I dont know. Im just glad hes okay They said we can start riding him and everything tomorrow...but I think we will give him a few extra days

There are different 'types' of colic,...,
impaction, gas, sand, and usually any stomach upset in horses is referred to as 'colic'.
Maybe it was sand or gas?
I don't know if you feed for sand colic, but you could start him on a pyllium product to try and ward that off in the future.
Keep an eye on him, have your vet's emergency phone number handy, and just watch him over the next few days.
Also, he probably was in 'shock' a little bit from the episode the other day, that plus the drugs, maybe what makes him not quite seem himself.
Try not to worry yourself to death.
Good luck to you and BJ

PS.,...,
I wonder if the 'time change' had an effect on your horse??
Maybe even feeding him a little bit later, coupled with the diet change (pasture to hay) was just enough of a difference to cause him some stress at feed time??
Just popped into my head??

The time change is a idea...but its only a hour different...we feed at the same time everyday.

I dont think its sand colic...as we live on a mountian side...and we pretty much live on rocks Could be gas...but I donno...the vet didnt know either...so I guess we will never know. He seems to be doing better tonight...so we will see how he is in the morning...Ill probably go out and check him again b4 bed though just to make sure hes alright.

Someone...give me some insight/calming thoughts!

Well...I just did a check before bed...hes all dirty like hes been rolling Im probably worrying to much. He wasnt down or rolling when I went out there...but its dark out. He came up wanting fed...we have been feeding him small 1/2 flake portions today. We havnt seen him poop or pee yet...well he pooped once in the trailer. Am I worrying to much?
I know horses lay down and roll natually just for the hell of it anyway...but right after a colic episode it has me a bit worried...some insight please!

Is he drinking enough ??
I would offer "special" drinks, like molasses water or gatorade flavored...and make sure he drinks PLENTY.
Glad to hear he's back home
Just keep an eye on him, they DO roll, esp. after a trip on the trailer, etc.
I would make sure everything keeps moving inside of him, if possible, graze him (anything left to graze on ? )
Lots of fluid, wet the food if neccessary...
