Strength

My horse recently (late August) tore 2 tendons - badly enough that they if the tear had not stopped where it did, the tendon would have been completely sliced. She is 3, so we're hoping that because she is so young her tendons will recover strongly. Is there anything herbal or otherwise I can give her, or any exercises (for either now or down the road) I can do to help strengthen/maintain it? Basically anything to help currently strengthen it, or in the future continue to strengthen in / maintain it. Thoughts / opinions / question / anything is appreciated.

when my horse tore a tendon last summer this is what we did... (literally i'm typing the vet notes)

.........

weeks 1-2: walk/trot for 10-15 min- NO CIRCLES
weeks 3-4: walk/ trot for 20-30 min-Add large circles
weeks 5-6: walk/ trot for 10-15 min. Canter-large circles ok.
weeks 7-8: walk/tror for 10-15 min. Canter ok-can start adding hills/smaller circles.

Avoid deep sand and or mud, as well as hills.

Call if lamness worsens at anytime or no improvment in 6-8 weeks.

Remember that tendon injuries can take 4-6 months to heal.

............

They also suggested having her stalled for 4 weeks but it just wasn't possible.

hope these help a little, although my horse only tore one (her back left) by getting kicked by a pasture mate...

how did your horse tare hers?

Thank you very much, I'll look at that again when the time comes.

The injury was August 23 - a couple days prior she had a cut, but the vet says the way the tendons are torn and the placement of cut indicates they're unrelated. Unfortunately we aren't sure what happened, but the vet believes she cast herself and reefed so hard to get loose that she tore her tendons. It's a long story - I'll take the time typing it up again if anyone would like me to.

As of now, she is still on stall rest, no walking. (It's Nov. 4th, has been that way since Aug. 23rd, but on the record I think it's Sept. 16th) and we won't know when she can walk until her next ultra sound which should be sometime in the next few weeks.

well I hope that she heals as quickly and completly for you, its such a frustrating thing to deal with because you never know what the outcome may be.

For the record my horse is back to normal, 100% sound we have even started jumping again.

keep me updated!

Thank you... it's great to hear about peoples horses who have had similar injuries that have come back 100% sound. Crossing our fingers that her young age may be a bonus with this, hoping that it'll help the tendons "regenerate", / strengthen to how they were before, or at the very least close!
