rain rot

I need to treat my horse for rain rot but the weather here is cold so I dont want to bathe him. I read about using Nolvasan solution but cant find out if its the same stuff you use for disinfecting? any suggestions??

My old riding instructor used a mixture of one part bleach to four parts water. She'd pick or scrub off the scabbies and then spray with the bleach mixture. Three days later she'd repeat if neccesary.

It worked especially well when her horses would get rot under thier blankets - the weather here in VA is variable all winter long. There are usually a few days in January and February that are warm enough to ride without a jacket during the day (the nights of course, are still cold as heck)

Scrub off the scabs and put on listerine. I've also used iodine.

Bleach and water and antibotics, for 10 day is how I cured one case of a retired horse that had it when he came in, owner said he had it for 3 years better than worse. so now 2 years later never got it back,
keep covered with a sheet morning mist is the worst for rain rot.

Nolvasan comes in different forms and concentrations. I believe there is the disinfectant for cleaning, a skin and wound cleaner, and an ointment. You can also look for a chlorhexidine solution which tends to be cheaper than the nolvasan. I believe for the chlorhexidine solution you mix 2 tbs to a gallon of water.

Another solution is to use petroleum jelly, leaving it on for about 24 hours and wiping it off with a cloth. It tends to take the matted hairs off with it although it does make your horses coat sticky.
