How long after...?

On Thursday I had the vet come out to get Hank vaccinated, do a general soundness check, and to take a look at his teeth. Everything went well until he looked in his mouth, yikes

Apparently his teeth had been done just a year ago, but by the looks of it, they'd probably never been done.

It took him well over an hour to finish with him, he had to get out all sorts of machines and drills and stuff, and went waaaay in there. He even got me to feel inside, there were hooks so sharp it was scary, so no wonder he holds his head so high when under saddle!

So we finished up, and he told me to give him some time since the whole alignment of his jaw has been changed. He hasn't been eating his hay as happily and quickly as before, I'm hoping when I stop by today it'll be all gone. I soaked what I gave him last night to hopefully soften it up a little bit.

How long do you think he needs to adjust, and how soon would you put a bit in his mouth again? I don't want him to have any more pain associated with his teeth, so I want to make sure he's not sore in there anymore

Did he have you put him on Bute ??
It might not hurt to do that for a few days.
When I had Red's teeth done a few years back with the 'power tools', etc..., more than a routine float,
I put him (as advised by my equine dentist) on Bute for about 4 days to ease any discomfort he might have gotten from all the dental work.
Just a suggestion.
I'm sure ole Hank will be back to happily chomping in no time .

I would wait on the bit until he is off any meds and eating unsoaked hay readily. No sense creating a problem with bitting. I'd take it slow. You may also need to adjust or change his bit. I'll bet you'll have much smoother rides too.

I too would put him on bute and wait 5-7 days before trying to ride him with a bit, you could ride him in a halter just a bit if you start having withdrawls
His mouth is probably really sore from all the work. So, I would def wait about a week.

I didn't bute, thats because I'm always wary of ulcers...

Dymond ate all her food well, but she just ate the hay a lot slower. First day, she had some wet hay fall out of her mouth, the next 2 days it took her longer to finnish it, on day 4 or so she seemed back to normal.
I waited 5 days to ride with a bit again.

She was fine.

I did get her adjusted by a chiro, though...the dental is hard on their jaw muscles and can get the poll/jaw etc out of alignment...
