This is not what I needed...

Just got a call from the vet. Lena's biopsy came back on that scab thing on here ear...Yep, its a sarcoid.

He said that it should be removed soon before it gets more deeply rooted. I asked how much it would cost, a couple hundred. Ouch. Lets see, full time college kid, part time job, two horses, and two dogs...Don't get me wrong, all of my animals get the care that they need amd are all in good health and I'll be honest, so far I'm not to bad off for a college kid financially AT ALL...

But a couple hundred?

Not only that, but she will have to be hauled to the clinic...if you have read my other post on trailering tips, you know Lena doesn't load and we don't have a trailer to load her with.

Sigh...I'm debating contacting other veterinarians in my area and getting estimates to compare. What do you all think? Is this worth it? And are most vets willing to do a payment plan?

Would your vet consider doing it at your stable? It doesn't sound like a major procedure. IMO $200.00 sounds very reasonable.

Perhaps you could ask him about trying the Xterra paste to try and remove it with this time......That would not cost a few hundred dollars.

How big is the sarcoid ? My gelding had one about the size of a pencil eraser on the rim of his ear about 1/4" below the tip. I treated it with Exterra for the seven days. Alls it cosdt me was the Exterra ($50 ). I don't see the need to haul a horse over there andpay a couple hundred on something so simple !!!

Exterra has to be used carefully. It looks like moist coffee grounds. I applied it graciously to the sarcoid daily for 7 days w/ a q-tip. Just be carefull the Exterra doesn't fall IN the ear !!!! Just coat the sarcid. The first or second time, the hoerse won't mind, but by day 3, there may be a little head tossing. Do not take the scab off, keep the scab in place and just keep applying the Exterra. Remember, where ever you put the Exterra, will "kill" the area. Make sure its just on the sarcoid. After 7 days, leave it alone, let the scab fall off, don't pick it off. As it heals underneath, the scab will fall away. Might take a cpl weeks. As the scab was falling off, I put on some panalog ointment around the area to keep the bugs/dirt out and eventually the entire scab fell off and just treated the whole area with the panalog.

The ear will be sensitive while you treat it. I kept a fly mask w/ ears on while I was treating my geldings. Keeps the bugs out and keeps it sorta clean.

Hope this helps.

Barnbum- Thanks for the advice. I looked it up and am definitely going to ask the vet about it.

I am actually having a second vet come out to look at it and see what he says. I'm hoping he will suggest the exterra or have a different solution. Lena's sarcoid is about the size of a quarter, maybe a little bigger, on the bottom crease of her ear. I'm really hoping that something can be done about this soon as I don't want it to keep spreading. Wish us luck with the vet tomorrow!
