Were any of the 2 yr olds she was turned out w/ uncut? Alot of time people think a young horse can 't breed a mare and get her pg and so turn them out together- truth is, they are able to impregnate as early as 1 yr in some cases. So, maybe the old owner is thinking no way she could be pg w/ her stallion and forgetting of any younguns she could of been out w/ in the pasture?
She really looks pg to me in the photos.
I have seen some horses fed unlimited canary grass hay get big bloated hay bellies that create that round barrel, bloated look. But, if that were the case, I would think there would be others that look similar.
Also- I would not believe what the lady said about a foal being dead- horses are pretty tough naturally.

Let us know what you find out.

On the previous owner saying no way... I have first hand experience with THAT. The old owners of on of my mares STILL swears up and down that the mare wasn't breed and couldn't have been. Never was anywhere else but her place. I got the mare in Oct. In may she foaled. So yeah. Sometimes it's just wish full thinking and not wanting to admit the possibility that the horse was bred there.

Good luck either way!
Yeah, I'm starting to wonder about all this. I guess we'll find out in a little while. It's frustrating, because I read what she says, convince myself there is no chance (it's so easy to talk myself out of this when I'm not home with her) but then I look at the pictures and think that no, she looks too big to me. I'll keep you posted, though. And thanks for the story, it helps.

Well she did have a young gelding out there that I knew of, so maybe he wasn't cut in time? I hope that's not the case. Lily's smart and sweet, but this little gelding was a smart . Even while I was trying Lily out, he'd stick his foot through the fence and hold it therer like he was stuck because he knew he'd get attention. The horses were being sold because the owner was moving, so I don't even know where that guy would have ended up.

Another possibility that crossed my mind is Jack, a young guy that lives where I keep Lily. Which would put her around a 5 month mark, which seems too early for me, but I dunno. He was just gelded this summer and is two. I think because he hadn't dropped yet, but I dunno. Maybe I'll ask about him, too, just in case.

As far as feed, she's only had a couple bales. We're in a hay shortage so we've been hotwiring the property and turning them out where ever there is grass and saving the hay for later in the season. So she hasn't even had much hay yet. As far as I know, she's still turned out in the brush because that hadn't been eaten down. So if she's gained this much weight just on the little bit of hay she's had, I shudder to think what she'll put on later in the year. Mind you, she's addicted to food. But I do agree that there should be others round like her, and there definitly is not. Even Legacy who's 20 and usually overweight is looking good, and that's the laziest horse I've ever met.

I really wish I was headed back home again this weekend to get more pictures and spend some time with my hand on her stomach. I've dreamed about her a lot the last couple nights and in every one she's pregnant, which tells me I'm hoping for a baby more than I'm willing to admit.

Yeah, I think I will ask the admins to move this for me since it's definitly no longer in the right section.

Please forgive me if anyone has asked this already I have not read all of the posts but is it a possibility that she just has " hay belly"? In the winter my little gelding gorges himself on hay and man oh man I would swear he was pregnant . I have had people ask when my mare is due to foal and then I have to tell them that Sparky is a boy

Cool. If you have an admin move it, then I will hopefully continue to get notified of any new posts to this thread. If you start a new thread, then I'm afraid I might miss it, and I don't want that to happen, because I'm dying to find out what the vet has to say.

Well that's why the thread was started. I wanted to know if she may have stomach issues, just be really chubby, or if she was preggo. So now that I've ruled out stomach issues, I'm just waiting to get her to the vet to figure out if she's preggo or needs to cut back on the hay.

I'll talk to the admins moving it so you don't have to worry about missing anything, okay? The last thing I want is to accidentally lose someone because of a new thread. I need all the help I can get, no matter how this goes.

More Pictures!

Okay, so I got outta class an hour eary (gotta love that!) so I decided I would take advantage of the spare time to upload more pics of the girl. These ones were taken Monday when I walked out to say good bye to her.

These were hard to get between the belly and her standing with her legs close together. I wanted them for future reference, though.

I like this one.

One for fun of the group she's turned out with. I took it while I was walking out to visit. I love that my horse is the only one not facing me. The two and three year olds weren't quite sure what to do about the approaching human and Lily swung her head, took one look, and swung it back. If she could roll her eyes, I'm sure she would have. Her look to the young ones said, "Geeze, relax. It's just my human coming to say hi."

L-R: Gevae (2 yr), Sadie (2 yr), Lily, Legacy (20 yr), Penny (3 yr), Bell, (2 yr), Sahara (2 yr), and Jack (2 yr).

These are the last of the pics I'll have for 2 weeks (and by then we will know anyway!). But if anyone wants to add input or change their minds based on these, let me know. I just wanted to share since I had them and have been looking at them a lot.

Being larger in the middle; weak topline and so when she gains weight she may sag alittle. Also when was she last wormed?? Worms have a big impact on how round a belly can be sometimes.

I do not think she is preggers if she has not been around a stallion, SOMEONE would know .......

Good luck, cute horse btw.

As far as the worms, she's on a rotational schedule with the other horses and I would be considerably surprised if she had worms. Not going to rule it out 100%, but I really would be shocked.

Haha, yes, they did teach me in biology that you do need intact male and female body parts to make a baby. The joy in only owning her 6 months and not being on the property all the time means I need to go off the basis that everyone if being totally honest. Not saying if she is preggo they aren't being honest, a mistake may have been made.

Thanks for the input, though. Every little bit helps. Either way, I want to know why she is so large so am definitly looking for suggestions in any direction. Like I said, she will be in to see a vet. I just have to be patient since I'm not there to do it myself.

And thanks for the compliment!

Wow- if she's not pregnant- I will eat my hat

Looks like youve got some time yet though- I would say probably around another 2 months or so?

Thanks for the laugh!!! I'll be sure to let you know the outcome!

And the most logical guess for a possible date right now seems to be end of Jan/start of February meaning she may have caught on a first heat in March. I would think it would have been too cold for her to catch any earlier than that. But who knows? I'm starting to think that when it comes to horses, anything is possible! I'm just hoping if she is indeed preggo I won't have a little winter baby as it'll be hard enough figuring out what to do in the spring, let alone during our coldest months. But whatever happens happens and I'll do my best no matter what.

I just wanted to say good luck with her if she is preggers. She looks it to me, not that I've been around a lot of mares in foal. Its good you're figuring this out now though. We got a mare a few years back from a dealer and didn't know she was in foal. We were starting to guess and were going to call a vet out. Then one morning the owner walks in and looks in her stall and there were two horses instead of one!! She foaled overnight in a 10x10 stall (poor girl). We then moved her to a proper foaling stall and got the vet out. She was in perfect health and so was her filly. Crazy times though.

I promise I will have a vet look at her. But she's gotta be trailered to the vet becuase it's cheaper than having the vet out and there are two other mares on the property that need to be checked for spring babies. And I'm off to Chilliwack really early Wednesday morning with the property owner, Sue, and her daughter and we come back late Monday night. On the plus side, that's 5 days for me to drill them with questions about Lily and raising babies and further discuss future possibilities. So anytime after Monday Sue will be able to load Lily and the other girls up and take her to get checked out. I'm going to really really stress that I want it done next week after we get back. When I talked to her about it before she did promise she would get Lily in after we get back from Chilliwack. It's so aggravating to not be able to do it myself because I'm getting impatient. Stupid college...lol.

I will be sure to let you know as soon as I know, okay? As long as it's not twins or I will probably pass out and then you might not here back from me for a few days! I'm getting so anxious and stoked and nervous to find out. At first, with the distance from my girl, it was easy to pretend she wasn't preggers. But now between the pictures and the dreams I have had, it's easy to pretend she is. So hopefully only another week to wait before we all find out. But time is passing soooo slowly!

Well, thanks for the luck! I can use every last little bit I can get, so it's very appreciated! Glad to hear the mare and filly in your story both made it throught the foaling totally healthy!

Oh my those new pics show her even better THERE IS NO WAY SHE IS NOT PREGGO!! I have never in my life seen a hay belly THAT big....and usually if you do see something close it is wormy and very thin everywhere else... she looks healthy to me.....

Thanks for the input! All these opinions are solidifying my view of things. And I'm glad you don't think she has worms. I really don't believe that can be a possibility as she was dewormed and is on a schedule. And yay for the healthy part, that was nice to hear!
