Well, I am just waiting for a response from the former owner. The only horse I know of that might have posed a threat was a really young paint, but I'm not sure when he was gelded. I saw him the day I bought Lily. Otherwise, I can't think of any other horses that might have done the job.

So now it's a waiting game. And she is going to be preg checked with a couple other mares. But I can't take her in myself, so have to wait for that. Hopefully she will get in to be checked soon, though. Should I have someone watching for any bagging up? How soon would that start?

Horselady, I'm going to to say good bye to Lily today, so I'll try the trick and see what I can feel. I'll be back home in two weeks and can try again then, if I don't feel anything now.

Guess I should have posted this in the breeding and not health.

Before you posted pics I was thinking that my daughter's gelding gets a hay belly that looks like he's pregnant but now that I see the pics I can't imagine it's anything else.
I mentioned on another thread that friends of ours bought a mare that wasn't supposed to be pregnant and the foal was born in December with a full coat of winter hair. Ya gotta love Mother Nature.
I very much doubt the foal is dead. It'll be interesting to see what you get. I'm sure you have no qualms about contacting the previous owner now that you know they dropped the ball on this.

A quick story- I was talking to a woman who raises quarter horses and she was telling me that the mares will sometimes switch babies or the baby of one mare will go with another mare and she'll feed two while the first one gets no baby. They had 2 mares that both foaled one night so they didn't know who's was who's and had to get them DNA tested. When they got the results it turned out that not only had the foals switched moms but the sire of one was their retired stud who wasn't being used for breeding anymore. They don't know how it happened.

Mother Nature has a sense of humor

My friend just went through this with her mare. The mare is pastured in her backyard alone. No other horses within miles. BUT she had a paint foal identical to friends cousin's stud that lives two states away. Their horses were together one night on a tie line while they were camping. Did a DNA and yes we know who daddy is.

And whose bright idea was it to tie a mare and a stallion next to each other. Do they not teach biology in school anymore??

I too think the subject of this thread is pregnant, and will probably have a gorgeous surprise at some point.

Hi PP, I have to say she looks bred to me as well. Good luck with the vet check and you will do fine.

I've got to chime in here too and say yes, I think she looks bred. Good luck and let us know what happens with the vet check.

Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone!

I got an email back from the old owner. Her words exactly were: "there shouldn't be any chance that Lily is pregnant, she usually gains weight if she has free feed of hay and doesn't get worked a lot. But if you guys think that she looks unusually big then maybe you should have a vet check her out just in case." That doesn't exactly tell me a yes, there is a chance or a no, there is 100% not a chance.

So she will be getting preg checked.

Can anyone tell me if she should be bagging up or anything? I took pictures, if you want them. Also, tried to feel for a baby, but I'm not sure if it was a foal or gas.

Wanted to add, a horse can still come into heat even if they are pregnant, correct? Because I'm sure she came into heat over the summer.

Perhaps she did not get in foal at the old owners place?
anyway she looks like she has a little time to go before foaling. and when ready she will begin to bag up. and get lax in the tail area.
Just in case get your delivery items ready, and that way you will be prepared.
pm me with any pictures or other questions I think it is going to be one cute foal.

It just depends on how far along she is. Some mares show more than others and she may be very close to foaling...or she may have a few more months. I first would get a vet out to check her over and do a ultrasound. They will also be able to give you a idea of how far along she is...which will give you a better idea of when she should start bagging up. Of course, keep your eye on her bag. Just to see if it changes at all. You can also post pics of her bag....We have seen many of them on HT But, first step is to get a vet out to see her. You can usually feel the baby moving(again depend on how far along she is) if you put your hand on her flank. And sometimes you can tell where the baby is sitting if you step back behind her and see which side of her looks 'bigger' Im not very good at explaining these things Im sure someone else can explain better if you dont understand what im trying to say

Horselady, thanks so much! I'll be in touch with you as things progress. I really don't think she managed to be bred here. But I suppose it could be possible. I'm starting to think when it comes to horses, anything really is possible.

Horselady44, I definitly know what you are trying to say. Like I said, I was feeling and felt movement, but her stomach is also very active, so I'm not sure if it was a foal or gas. And as for the leaning, I know what you mean and I think I see it, but then I talk myself out of it. And she's not bagging up yet. But I was just worried about how soon that started. Think I got that part figured out, though.

I'm just so lucky to have everyone here to add input and support! If she is preggo, I'll be sure to make a thread in the breeding section.

Okay, for those of you who have helped me out, I wanted to give one last update to this thread. It's arranged that Lily will be into the vets within the next two weeks to be checked out. We'd get her in sooner, but I'm 3 hours away and can't drive a truck and trailer myself to haul her even if I did make it back home, and the lady I board with is going to Chiliwack for 5 days. I'll be going with her then, too. So we're going to wait until after the trip to get her checked out. Hopefully I can make it home to go in with Lily to hear what the vet says, but if not I have trusty people that will give me a call as soon as they have news. She'll be going in with two other mares that are due for the spring, so at least she won't be facing to trip to the vet clinic alone.

So I'm thinking this is pretty much the end of this thread now that I've determined that this isn't so much a health issue as it is a matter of her either being ridiculously fat in the middle (okay, still a health issue, but one I know how to solve!) or pregnant, which seems like the likely cause right now. If she is indeed pregnant, look for a thread in the breeding section a couple weeks from now (unless I get impatient before then!). And if I have anymore news from the former owner as to a possible daddy, I'll let everyone know.

Again, thank you so so so much for all the input and advice! I just don't know what I'd do without so many people to back me up and help me out.

Opel, I feel really bad for teasing you about Lily's belly on facebook. I had no idea that she MAY be preggers. I had a pregnant mare once(bought her that way, but breeder thought she had been exposed to the stallion too late). Anyhow she was pregnant and she was a TB and I guess in the back of my mind I was picturing my old mare when I saw your pics of Lily.

Long story short~the foal was full term but stillborn and I lost the mare a year later to a horrific accident. While we have very
nicely put together mares, I am scared to death to go there again.

Oh TB Lady, don't feel bad. I totally understand. I'm sorry you lost your foal and then your mare, though. Hugs! And I really didn't mind the teasing. It lightened the mood.

I'm not even sure what to think about Lily right now. The old owner is 99% sure Lily wasn't bred on her property as she hasn't had a stud on the farm for 2 years and I just don't see how Lily could have been bred since I've owned her. Plus, that would put her around a 5-6 month mark and she looks too big for that, I think. So right now it's sounding like she's just blown up like a balloon because of weight gain, but to look at her it doesn't look that way at all to me. I wish I were back home again to spend some more time figuring this out. But I'll know in two weeks when she goes in to get checked. Until then, she's in the back of my mind every waking and dreaming minute, but I'm not letting myself think about it.

Anyway, please don't feel bad, okay? I'll keep you posted and for the time being, everyone is fine so it's all okay. And again, hugs!

Let us know what you find out.

On the previous owner saying no way... I have first hand experience with THAT. The old owners of on of my mares STILL swears up and down that the mare wasn't breed and couldn't have been. Never was anywhere else but her place. I got the mare in Oct. In may she foaled. So yeah. Sometimes it's just wish full thinking and not wanting to admit the possibility that the horse was bred there.

Good luck either way!
