2 month Update pic. pg. 5...BAD Injury on new horse! (pic)

When I went to the barn this morning I found that my new mare had laid her leg wide open on something. I cleaned it the best I could, wrapped it to hold the skin in place, and placed an emergency call to the vet. He won't be able to get here for about 4 hours. Please say some prayers for Shiloh to have a healthy healing. Warning...pic is kinda graphic.

I'm a nervous wreck waiting for the Doc!

Oh dear, that looks like it'll hurt...but does not look terribly deep so it should heal with the right care. Were you able to spot what she may have snagged that on? I'd do a thorough search of her stall area while you are waiting for the vet.

Please update us once you've seen the vet and let us know how she's doing.

She was out int he pasture when it happened. I walked the front pasture and my husband walked the back pasture but we found nothing-not even a blood stain to indicate where it may have happened.

Oh, wow! Poor thing, that looks painful, but as others have said, at least it doesn't look to be too deep. It's so frustrating when something like this happens and we can't find what they did it on. Healing prayers coming your way.

Had a horse strip the skin like this on his back leg and about 6 months later again on his front leg...keeping it clean and spraying with schreiner's at least twice a day healed him right up(took a couple of months for the wound to heal completely), with barely a scar...praying for similar results with your horse...

Looks like a leg was caught in a fence with wire? Voice of experience here,
I am sure the vet will cut off that skin, and advise you what to do to encourage healing.
prayers for quick healing.

Wow! They sure know how to get hurt don't they? I hope the vet visit is painless (for the horse and your wallet) and that Shiloh has a speedy recovery. As long as your diligent in your treatment that should heal up nicely with very little scarring.

Good luck!

Here is the shot of her leg after the vet left...Sorry, it's a cell phone shot...

He gave her penicillin and a tetanus anti-body shot as well as something to put her to sleep on her feet so that he could work with her leg. The vet did indeed cut off the hanging skin, put wound powder on it, some gauze and a light wrap. I am to give her another shot tomorrow. I was told to leave her wrap for 3 days, remove the wrap, clean it, put more powder on it and re-wrap it. If anything looks funky or concerns me to call him, otherwise give him a call on Monday to report how she's doing. Oh...and she can't go out because of all of the mud we have here right now so she's in for the next five days. I may be able to hand walk her in the front yard where it isn't muddy but there will be no turn out for her for a while.
Edited to add: Thankfully she missed all connective tissues so there was no ligament damage. If she heals without infection, all will be well.
We couldn't get her to walk to her stall when he was done because she was basically asleep on her feet so she is standing in the isle where we worked on her. She is not tied so there will be no issue there. My hubby came home from work to help me (isn't that awesome for a non-horsy person!). He said he would stay home and check on her in an hour. When she is able to move he will put her in her stall for me.

Okay...I ordered some Schreiner's Herbal Solution. I pray it arrives quickly enough to do some good. Thanks for the suggestion!
