What a shock it is to come out and find an ugly injury like that. Rest assured... she WILL heal and thank goodness she missed all the important stuff in her leg! Just follow your vet's instructions. If you have any questions... or if you see the slightest sign of infection, call the vet. We will all pray for speedy healing. Don't worry excessively, you have done a good job taking care of an injury as quick as you could. Good hubby too!

It all went better than expected and I did it with no help. She was very good for me.
Your doing a great job with her. Its looking alot better. Im glad the soaking helped loosen things up. Makes it alot easier to get the icky stuff off. Your doing a good job. Im glad to hear she was a good girl for you too. Its looking really good. Keep up the great work!

Day 19 Update

Here is the day 19 update for those of you following shiloh's progress. It was in the low 40's today so hosing was not fun. I froze my fingers but did the best I could. It will be warmer in a couple of days when I have to do this again.

Before treatment...

After wet towl wrap, before hosing...

After hosing and sponging...

Today I think I am beginning to see progress. The flap of loose skin is starting to fill in and reattach. That is a sign of progress.

Its looking really good...if the flap is starting to reattach, progress should start to be more noticeable pretty soon...you're doing a great job with cleaning it...

I was told to clean it every 3 days. The days in between give the wound time to heal and make more rejenerating cells.

I've been waiting for an update. So glad to see one. Looks like you're doing a great job. I know it can't be easy getting all that gunk off that leg. I had to deal with a much smaller wound earlier this year on my mare's leg. It took over four months for it to heal completely. It may take yours longer though as it is a much larger area. Keep up the good work! I'll be checking back for more updates.

Fortunately i have never had to deal with a bad injury like that. Why do you keep having to hose the scab off It wont heal if you just leave the scab on for it to heal? Is it because proud flesh is forming?

No, I am not having any issues with proud flesh. I was told to remove the scabbing/slough to allow air and the schreiner's wound spray to get to the wound. It stimulates the flesh to create more healing cells to aid in healing.

Thanks for continuing to post progress pictures of your mare's leg as it heals. It's looking better each time we see it. Keep up the good work.

I know it sounds silly , but if i had a scab like that and i picked it off, i can only imagine how much it would hurt. And i think it would be hard for me to inflick more pain on him even though it would be better in the long run. Isn't that the purpose of the scabing to protect it and growing more skin? If i ever have an injury like that i want to know what to do, beside freak out and i think i would pass out !!!

Shiloh is doing very well with the treatments and doesn't seem to be in much pain. She allows me to wash the scabs off without any major objections. The only reaction is to lift her leg up when it is being hosed. She actually doesn't seem to mind me picking or sponging off the scabs after they are moistened loose.
You'd be amazed what you can do when faced with an injury. You have to do what your horse needs because no one else is going to step in and do it for you. You might panic at first but you probably won't pass out. Their is no time for that in the face of an emergency. I never thought I could deal with something like this either but you just do it. You do basic first aid, call a vet, and get some knowledgable person to guide you with treatments. The people from Schreiner's are great advisors (thanks to those that suugested them to me). I e-mail them the pics of how it's looking and they tell me whether to continue treatment as is, if it needs cleaned better, etc. Mylissa has been a great advisor. I have talked to her on the phone twice in the beginning and now e-mail her the updated pics.
If you are a parent, that helps also as you probably have already had your share of emergencies with your children.

1 month update

Well, it's been just over a month since Shiloh skinned her leg. The wound is now making good healing progress. The flap has filled in and pulled together completely. The top is pulling together more each and every day also. I am pleased with the progess so far. Of course, I didn't forget a pic for all of you.

I've been following this thread.... what a great job you are doing - and look how the top of that wound is closing up! It is getting better and better. Good luck and keep posting pics. I bet she is going to have only the smallest of scars when all is said and done. Good luck!

Its looking really good...and it really helps when you can see it getting better...those first couple of weeks have you thinking it will never heal, then all of a sudden, you start to see progress, and you can see progress almost every time you work on it...you're doing great...

You should be pleased with the progress...you're doing an excellent job! A couple more months and you'll not even know she was injured.
