Leg Laceration-Updated Pictures 10/2/2009

The mare we just got in today has a leg injury that has been on and off with healing for a while now. Like over a year! It doesn't bother her AT ALL! She is not lame on it nor does it hinder her range of motion. When our foal is born I will have the vet look at it too but I wanted some input at what I might be able to use to help this heal up and have the sking start to actually grow back! Here is a picture just off the trailer before being cleaned up and bandaged.

Not looking to bad in the healing process, although it does appear to have just a slight bit of proud flesh around the edges.

I would scrub well to try and debrie as much of the cauliflower look as possible to get that pink/light blood look with something like Novalsun Wash and then use Novalsun Ointment wrapping at night to keep excess moisture/crud off, allowing for air during the day. Another week, two maybe at most any openess should be gone, and only soft healed skin left. At that point, I use Prep H to help speed the regrowth of hair and keep tissue inflammation down in the final healing process.

She also appears to have some swelling about 4 inches above the top of the injury and just below her hock/knee bend?

The original injury was that she peeled the skin all the way to the bone from the hock to the ankle and that the flap of skin was dragging on the ground when it happened. So she does still have that swelling/scar tissue there. I don't ever expect to get the leg perfect. She was actually in a cast during the original injury for about 30 days I guess. I am going to leave it wrapped at least until tomorrow and then will probably take it off and start medicating it.

Here are some pics from today. After a almost week of having Wonder Dust used. This was after a heavy cleaning. Not sure if it is looking better or not. I know only a few days won't tell me much but I am one for wishfull thinking! lol

Hmmm....not seeing any improvement. Not a real big fan of using the wonderdust however on this type of injury.

A thought, what about a sugardine pack for a few days?

This is by far the best medicine I have ever used.
Healing time cut in half.

I was told by a vet that Wonder Dust isn't good in a proud flesh wound, because it actually makes it harder for the skin to grow up and over the skin. We only used alu-spray, just to keep the flies and dirt out, but to also allow it to dry. I personally would try Underwood's, it seems like it would be ideal in this situation, based on all the thing's I've heard about it on here!

To bad you couldn't get the horse in a hiperbaric chamber. Alginate type dressings could be usefull as well without putting anything on it. Plain water hosing can damage cells causing them to burst. Saline wash is best as it's similar to the bodys fluids and won't cause damage to the new cells.

I have a mare that had a similar injury and it healed the same way.. on again off again for about a year.. I was told to spray it will Bleach water, just about an inch of bleach in a large spray bottle and fill the rest with water.. It will sting when you spray it on this will also prevent proud flesh.. When I started using it my mares leg healed up pretty quick now all that is left is a small quarter sized scab. I was also told not to use bleach later on but I swear by it as it did wonders for my mare

My personal opinion would be to scrub and clean the old stuff off daily as much as she will allow. And then spray bluekote on it. I would not wrap it, and let it dry.

My second choice would be the underwoods. Although I have never used it I totally believe it works and have a bottle at home just in case. (We usually use a home remedy from an AZ plant tea - but can't always get it sent to us, so the underwoods is back up).

Here are some pics of my mare's injury. No lumpy bumpy scar I love Equaide/ Go to Equaide.com

After treating with Equaide...

NO proud flesh, even ate away the proud flesh when I gave her a break off from the Equaide and proud flesh started to form.

It took about 8 monthes but the results were well worth the time. She had fileted her skin back as yours did, but I placed as close as approximate as I could. She had even severed and artery.

These pics were done with my cell phone so not the greatest but we have some new skin growing around the edges. The cut is looking MUCH better in person. Pics don't do it justice.

I agree with the underwoods 100%. I used it to heal a horrible wound on a rescue colt. Was the best stuff I ever used.

The vet is correct that wonder dust really isn't a good option. These types of caustic products destroy ANY tissue, healthy or not. So they have to be used very very carefully and slow healing.

For this wound, it might be a good idea to have the vet x-ray the leg to see if there is something underneath that is causing the chronic inflammation in that area.

Talk to your vet about the getting a steroid/antibiotic ointment to put on the wound. Keep it clean, keep it wrapped and try to minimize movement of that leg. Motion, exposure to flies, etc--anything that irritates that wound can lead to continued proud flesh formation.

Do not mean to highjack your thread....

Here is the injury to my colt.

Here is pics of Smoke the day it happened, before the Vet came and from today. The attack was last Wednesday afternoon. (taken from a thread dated on 4/9/2008)

In this pics, to the left, is a hole you cant really see that in three fingers deep, and finger depth. Behind that black lump is another hole.
This is after the Vet cut away the dead skin on Monday.

The wounds get flushed for about 20 min. each with water then the Underwoods put on it, twice a day.
He is on SMZ's 15 pills, 2x a day and starting on Monday, 10 cc's of anti-biotics added on top.

I am jumping the gun here, but wanted to show you how it has come along in 5 days.

This was taken on Tuesday when the Underwoods was started.

This is today, 5 days on the Underwoods.

The other side.

Today.

Great progress for just 5 days.

Smoke has been on the Underwoods for 10 days now.

He was injured on 4/2, Vet out 4/7 and the Underwoods started on 4/8.

The day after the Vet was here and started the Underwoods.

5 days later.

10 days later, taken today.

The other side.
Day after Vet was out and Underwoods started.

5 days later.

At 10 days, taken today.

I love, love this stuff.

Those who are having a hard time finding it, just order it from the web site.

I snapped one quick pic tonight at feeding. Raining like cats and dogs here.

Pic on 4/18.

Pic today, 5/7.

As you can see the healing process is amazing. I have not used anything like this before and I will use the Underwoods from now on.

Now, there is just about no visability of scars.

If you try this, the leg will start to heal faster than what it is doing.

Well I broke down and ordered Underwoods this weekend. It was shipped out on Monday so hopefully it will be here today or tomorrow. Then she will get a nice IN DEPTH cleaning of the leg and Underwoods started. I will take progress report pics for you all as well.

I feel terrible as GiGi's leg seems to be swelling more than when I first got her. Probably because she is in the stall half of the day instead of outside 24/7. I just got my underwoods ointment in the mail so I put it on right away. Here is a picture from before application. I will take another pic probably Monday to see if there is progress being made.....Then after healed we will start the leg sweats....
