I am happy with how things are going and also how the leg looks over all. So I am not going to do any x-rays at this point in time. I appreciate the concern though honestly. But when our vet was out the last time for the filly he took a look at her and thought she was just fine as well. Just taking time to heal now that we are actually working on it.

Wonder Dust

The best use for Wonder Dust is to get rid of proud flesh. It takes some time, but works like a charm.

Understand. Thought I would just throw that out there. I took our gelding to the University and learned a lot form the Vets there on wounds and calcification.

Sometimes when swelling doesnt go away, it can be calcification.

It looks really good. Keep us posted.

I just went through this with my horse. She had something very similar to your horse. We ended up doing surgery to remove all of the scar tissue. It has been a very long road to recovery, but she is finally doing well. Hopefully your horse does better with the underwoods!

Here is a one month photo. If it looks icky it is cause I just had washed it down with water. The top dark area I could not get peeled off and I am not about to rip it open! LOL

It is looking so much better. I wish pictures would show how it truly looks.

I used Wonder Dust on my mare's injured leg and have no proud flesh. I also used Underwoods and silver sulfadiazine (sp?). Before putting anything on it, I cleaned/scrubbed it with Eclipse wound cleanser. It's healing up quite nicely now. Here's a few pics of her progress (not as large an area as yours but about in the same place).

Two weeks after injury:

Day 28:

After five weeks (this has some wonder dust still on it):

Day 44 -- After skin flap was trimmed
.

Good luck and keep up the good work. I know it might seem like it's taking forever to heal but persistence pays off.

It's looking great! Good work About that black stuff, next time the vet's out I'd have him debride a little for you. It'll set you back a little bit in new skin, but that area needs to be clean, or else you get set up for more ickies. Don't you just love these long, drawn out healing processes?

Sorry I hadn't posted in a while. I do have an updated pic. From my cell phone which doesn't take that great of pictures. I didn't think I had made much progress but now looking at it compared to a month ago I do see a big difference! Here is a picture from Monday 9-14-09

Once again in person it doesn't look as grose as what it does in pics.

Her leg looks similar to Angel's with the hair loss. Angel was snake bit when she stepped into a hole. Angel's hair has almost all grown back except where the bite blew out and the two places on her ankle. Her leg is still swollen from the ankle down. The whole leg was about 4 times larger than the others a bout 3 days after the bite. The vet said that we will take x-rays in 3 more months to see what is going on. She thinks the swelling will go down completely. Angel does run and buck without any problems.

Does look better.
I do feel, her leg will remain large if the swelling has not went down by now.

Horselady, the black stuff is part of the medication. Its like a bandaide.

Thats what happened to my Snickers. She didnt have a snake bite, but an injuy. When her leg blew, my Vet said that was the infection in there and it affected the ankle. She has a large ankle and cant bend it.
Not trying to discourage you, but she may have a large ankle from now on. I pray I am wrong and all will be just fine.

I, too, am a fan of the Underwoods

Perhaps consider giving Buddy Underwood a call (his number is on the bottle). He will tell you NOT to wash the wound at all. I know when we have dealt with major wounds, we dont wash anything, at any time. I believe if you do so, you can take 2 steps forward and one back, all the time

We just kept squirting the Underwoods on 2-3 times a day, poofing the Baking Powder on over top of it, the crust would fall off in a few days leaving new skin and we'd keep squirting and poofing away, and each time the scabby would fall off, the wound itself got noticeably smaller each time

Good luck!

So I know you all said don't clean it just let the scabby fall off but I couldn't! I just had to clean it. And WOW what an amazing improvement just in the last two weeks. Here are pictures from tonight 10/1/09.

I really want this mostly healed by winter as I REALLY don't want to deal with cleaning it in the cold with water and such!

In this pics, to the left, is a hole you cant really see that in three fingers deep, and finger depth. Behind that black lump is another hole.
This is after the Vet cut away the dead skin on Monday.

The wounds get flushed for about 20 min. each with water then the Underwoods put on it, twice a day.
He is on SMZ's 15 pills, 2x a day and starting on Monday, 10 cc's of anti-biotics added on top.

I am jumping the gun here, but wanted to show you how it has come along in 5 days.

This was taken on Tuesday when the Underwoods was started.

This is today, 5 days on the Underwoods.

The other side.

Today.

Great progress for just 5 days.

Smoke has been on the Underwoods for 10 days now.

He was injured on 4/2, Vet out 4/7 and the Underwoods started on 4/8.

The day after the Vet was here and started the Underwoods.

5 days later.

10 days later, taken today.

The other side.
Day after Vet was out and Underwoods started.

5 days later.

At 10 days, taken today.

I love, love this stuff.

Those who are having a hard time finding it, just order it from the web site.

I snapped one quick pic tonight at feeding. Raining like cats and dogs here.

Pic on 4/18.

Pic today, 5/7.

As you can see the healing process is amazing. I have not used anything like this before and I will use the Underwoods from now on.

Now, there is just about no visability of scars.

If you try this, the leg will start to heal faster than what it is doing.

OMG how did that happen? im glad its healing quickly looks good!

Wow! It is still that open after 4 months of treatments?! That's a little intimidating for me. I have been treating Shiloh's wound for almost a month and was hoping that things would start moving along pretty quickly for us. I am seeing improvement and parts of the wound are closing up. I am using Schreiner's. I love how it's working so far and the customer service is excellent. I have e-mailed pics to them and they tell me exactly what to do for her. They did tell me that all the scabbing needs to come off every 3 days or so. If you are having trouble getting the scabbing off with a hose, you could try what I do. I wrap the wound in a warm wet towel held on by vet wrap or polo wrap for an hour or two to soften the scabs. They will hose off quickly afterwards. I have also just reached over and picked the softened scabs off. Shiloh is getting used to it by now. I just ordered 2 more bottles of the Schreiner's wound spray. I figured I might as well save on the shipping costs.
