I think I put this in another thread somewhere but I really can't wait to follow her progress. Can you do pics each day??? I too bought some underwoods just "in case". Now of course we have an injury but not one I can treat with underwoods.... I really am interested in how this stuff works especially since this is an ongoing thing with this mare.... Good luck and I really am hoping for her sake it works....

I too am a huge fan of Underwoods. When Maverick was a yearling he did everything possible to scar himself up (and give me a heart attack) including going over the barb wire fence which snapped and wrapped around his leg. I didn't know with all the havoc he seemed to muster if he would see 2. He will be 3 this coming Tuesday and the only scar he has is a thin line down one hoof. Needless to say when I bought my filly I also bought another bottle of Underwoods.

You sure are asking a lot of me to get pictures daily! WOW. I don't know about daily but at least every few days. The swelling seems to be down today so that is good. It says not to wash it but I want to cold hose her leg down to help with the swelling but don't know if I should or not. So I did tonight, under the scab that came off it was looking good. Most of the scab stayed in place but a section came off. I will probably do pics on Sunday, maybe tomorrow.

True Equaide lover

My daughter and I both read this posting with interest. Her first horse cut her leg wide open about 2 years ago. It was to the point that the vet we had at the time wanted to put her down <needless to say, he is NOT my vet anymore!> Her leg looked like the one who's owner also recommended Equaide in this post. (So much so, in fact, that my daughter asked me why Dixie's pictures were on the Internet).

We tried everything and anything. While many swear by Underwood's, it did not do the trick for us. After using Equaide for a couple of weeks, we saw amazing results. We would doctor her, let it dry, and then wrap her leg to keep dirt and mud out of it. She is a pasture horse, and does NOT appreciate being locked up in a barn. We tried -- her normally sweet nature disappeared and she was a total bear.

Good luck with the leg. Just don't give up hope. Dixie has almost completely healed now, and when it first happened, you could see her ligaments and tendons every time she moved her leg. Now she is back to her normal self, and is even able to be ridden lightly by kids.

Here are pics from today. 6-14. The pictures make it look WAY worse than it is. It isn't shiny at all actually. It is pretty dry and you can feel a nice tough layer of hopefully skin growing! It looks SOOOOOO much better. No more hard edges on it and it is neither larger than the rest of the leg nor sunk in like something gouged it. So after just 3 days I am already seeing a difference!

Here are pictures from today 6-24. When you see it on an every day basis it can be hard to see improvement. Now that I look back on the last photos I do see improvement! Whooo hooo! Once again pics don't do justice as these pics make it look all lumpy even though it isn't. And you can see that the skin really is starting to grow as there is more pink skin all around the edges. Hopefully another two weeks will bring a great report card again!

Oh and the underwoods bottle says not to clean it so I don't want to scrub and scrub at it. Thus the rough looking edges.

Ask your vet about Dermagel. It is a wonderful medicine. I have used it with only waterhosing the wound daily to stimulate the wound and remove any dried material. It heals wounds wonderfully.

Yes, I see improvement. I am so happy for you.
I love this stuff.

I dont think the swelling will go away all together, but getting it all healed over is better, IMO.

I will post pics of our stallion where he was injured and you can see how well it closed with little to no scaring.

I think it looks better it doesn't look so shiney and slimey but maybe that is just like you said the pictures and it does looks like the overall size is smaller. Have you ever measured it?? to see if its shrinking???

Here is pics over a year later of our Stallions injury.

Not so worse side.

This one is where he had the two holes, two fingers deep to the length of the fingers. It has a indention to where the meat had to be cut away.

Week 3 pics. Taken today 7/3/09.... This seems to be going so slowly! But I am not a patient person when it comes to this kind of thing! I just want it to be healed so I can get shoes put on and go for a RIDE!

That looks so much better and you can see it healing on up.

How many times a day are you putting the Underwoods on?
Are you cold hosing it twice a day?

Its hard waiting for something to heal, but you were late into the process adding the Underwoods, so it seems its taking a long time.

After it healed up, I would not sweat her leg for the swelling. It may raw up the would again. You may have to accept there will always be swelling there.
I would have it x-rayed to see if there is some calcification going on from the trama to the leg.

There had been x-rays done before she came here. So I know there is nothing extra going on.

I put it on 2x a day and clean it out 1 x a week.

I also have heard too many negatives about wonderdust...
I'd use Schreiner's...

Didn't see the after pics...looks better with Underwoods..

We never used any fancy products on our animals. Just good old epsom salt in warm water. Scrub off all the dead stuff so that it heals from the inside out. I was always told that you want to get rid of those rotting edges to promote the growth of healthy tissue. But I am no vet. Good luck and thanks for keeping us updated!

Calcification can occur any time and grow.
I know, I rehabbed a horse who had it.
I suggest doing more x-rays.

We flushed twice a day with cold water and Underwoods twice a day.
