What age to geld?

Olliver is 10 months old...at his pre-purchase exam (at age 6 months) both of his testicles were dropped - and still feel that was to me. It's gonna be the time of year to consider gelding soon. Is he too young? Is there such a thing as too young? There are no mares on the property currently, only geldings, but my friend who boards him is insisting that we have him cut this spring, but I don't want to rush it if I shouldn't.

What age did you have your colts gelded?

J.

I had Copperhead cut at 1 1/2 years. But you can castrate at one day old.

Just pick a time when the flies won't drive the poor boy crazy when he loses his jewels.

I had a friend that had
a pony colt done at 4 months last spring.
He came through with flying colors.
And now she dosen't have to worry about keeping
him seperate from the rest of the herd.

As long as both "boys" have dropped, you can definitely have him gelded. We did three last November - 2 were 1.5 yrs old and the other was 7 months old. Definitely do it before or after fly season!

We've had three gelded all at different ages, my mustang we had done at 20 months, adopted him at 18 months and let him settle before we put him under the knife.

My coming three year old was done at 2 years and my Tenn Walker was done at 4 years. He was intended to be a breeding stallion[he was one of 3 studs left in his line, my neighbor has the other two and gelded one of them] but he just wasn't controllable enough to breed, so he was gelded for safety purposes.

Any age is fine, as long as it's fairly cool outside for post surgery, so the bugs don't bother the incision and it get infected.

We normally geld our colts the spring of their yearling year, but you can certainly do it earlier. We prefer to foal in March and April, so we wait until the following March to cut simply due to the heat and flies.

Same as Diamond Y, we gelded our boys in April of their yearling year. April is warm enough that they can be outside and heal well, but too early for flies to be a problem.

Geld Sooner Rather Than Later

As Long As Its Not Fly Season And Both "boys" Have Dropped Its Been My Experience Especially If There Are Mares Present Geld Asap. I Had My 4 Month Old Breeding Stock Paint Gelded 5 Years Ago And As Far As The Myth That A Stud Colt Wont Reach Maximum Size If Gelded To Young Its False! False! False!. Jack Is Now 16.2 Hands And 1500 Lbs. As Always Though Its Ultimately Your Desicion As Their Your Horses, My Best To You And Hopes For A Speedy Recovery
