dentist arrested?

I heard of an "equine dentist' that was arrested for administering drugs without having a verterinary license.

I have also heard of shoers giving drugs to horses.

What is the law on this? Is it that the dentist was charging for the drugs or that he gave them at all?

Can the farriers that give drugs get arrested as well? How are non vet dentists still practicing?

What was the name of the farrier out of curiosity?

I think you have to be a licsensed vet to administer sedatives.

In My understanding the ONLY one who can administer drugs to a horse other than their own horse is a Vet.

You can buy and administer drugs to your own horse ( you own this horse), but it is illegal for you to buy drugs and administer them to another persons horse.

This is how I understand it and what I have read in the past and also been told.
Might be different in other areas, don't know

i think if u have the rx from the vet for ur animal u r allowed to give it, but another person not a vet can't give u prescription drugs....it just like people rx. also if the dentist is good w/ horses he/she shouldn't need to give a sedative. i had a vet come out to do my horses teeth and the drugged her up BAD and she didn't need that done to her. so i had a enquine dentist come out the nest time and he was done in a reasonable amount of time and she didn't fuss at all.

You are right... This is what I have understood and have been told. The dentist that came out here, went to dental school and graduated and she administered drugs, but it was a very mild sedative and it lasted all of 30 min maybe.

It is illegal for farriers or dentists to provide sedation unless they posess a veterinary license. An equine dentist or farrier is not a medical doctor. Technically no medicines are to be dispensed without the vet seeing the horse first.

I'm pretty sure it's a federal law, not just in my state.

I used an equine dentist before and he had his wife sedate the horse cause she was a vet. He said that he isn't allowed to.

I know in VA. that farriers could legally give horses sedatives with written permisson from the owners.
So you were to sign a paper stating if needed or in a emergency that the farrier can administer them.

But i trust my farrier enough to sedate my hroses as hed only do so in the most needed and dire of circumstances....

I have to disagree respectfully....
My horses were bad about hter teeth getting done...and my vet who did the dentistry was SUPER good with all of our horses and a great vet...but gave them sedatives...

ALl the vets whom have done all of my horses teeth have adminstered a lil bit of sedative...

I would too..
I dont know personally of a horse that acts perfect for there teeth done without sedatives....but thats just me.. not saying they arent out there but id freak too with power tools in my mouth...

I know several equine dentists in MI that drug horses without a license. I REFUSE to let these dentists work on my horses. No one, other than my vet or myself is allowed to sedate my horses. My equine dentist is AWESOME and can usually float most horses without sedative.

I have been trying to get others in my area to follow suit but they like the dentist that comes around and drugs the horses because he's cheap...they won't feel that way when one of their horses has a reaction and the "dentist" doesn't have the qualifications to fix what he did.

When the vet prescribes drugs, they are for YOU to use on YOUR horse. Period. Any other use is against the law.

They went to dental school, or were a licensed vet?

No she was not a licensed vet, she went to the equine dental school or whatever it is called. She did the the whole float and balanced the mouth thing. I believe what she used was a supped up motrin type of stuff not the narcotic type of stuff. She said it was the only thing that she could use.

Maybe Carri will chime in and can help with what she used. She used the same dentist. I do not use her anymore, beliieve me once was enough. I use someone else now.

It is seen as practising veterinary medicine without a license - same here in Ontario. If our local vets won't do teeth it's not easy getting someone from 200mi. distant and arrange for the vet to be there at the same time and then it get's pretty expensive.

All my horses are good with shots, farrier and wormer but I don't believe anyone could float their teeth without a sedative and when the dentist works on me I want the good stuff also.

OK, first of all, every state has different laws. This dentist is in Oklahoma and has been a VERY well respected, practicing equine dentist for 15 years in the state of Oklahoma. He's been to school and gotten all the appropriate education. More education on dental care than a vet.
A horse has to be sedated to float teeth. Period. This guy was set up, arrested and charged!
Oklahoma very quietly changed it's laws so that only a vet can float teeth. Then, this dentist was called, set up and appointment (because he was not aware of the law change), went to the "client's house" to fulfill his obligation, and was slapped into handcuffs and charged with a FELONY! For trying to do his JOB!!! The same job he's had for the last 15 years!
This is an extremely honest, kind, educated guy, whom I (and many others in the area) feel was wronged.

Interesting thread. So when my neighbor calls and asks me to bring my banamine and give her horse a shot, I can get arrested????

I did not know this.

a LOT of the farriers around here will sedate, and I know they are not vets. kind of scary. my current farrier is blown away by the amount that sedate without a vet present. he is out of CA originally and said that would never fly there! he will sedate horses, but he partners up with a vet and goes with them to wherever he knows needs it.
I never really understand the line between vet and equine dentist.... and what was really allowed and what not

Cameo, she uses Xylazine Hydrochloride (Rompun). It is not legal for anyone to administer sedation to a horse unless they are a licensed veterinarian or the owner of the horse. I am not sure if the people who do it just don't know (I didn't know until after I let her do it) or if they know they are breaking the law, but when she told me what she was using I made sure I had some Yobine on hand, which reverses the effects of Rompun almost immediately in the event of a bad reaction. The phrase Rompun Rage was not coined for no reason! My horses teeth were floated so "vigorously" that I have not had to have them done in over a year, despite the fact that I have them checked every 6 months, and the vet thought my 9 yr old was at least 15 because she took the grooves off of the fronts of her teeth.
