Your pet peeves

Im just curious, as a horse handler, rider, trainer whatever it is... what is your biggest pet peeve to see?

Mine would have to be seeing people put stud chains OVER a horses nose. I cant stand it! I guess I can see why you might do it... I guess. I just dont like the idea of a chain going over my horse's nose. If Im going to use it it'll be under the chin or not on at all. I just think its extremely tacky to have it over the nose.

Another thing I hate to see is people using a million different gadgets for "quick fixes".

I think those two are probably the biggest peeves of mine. What are yours?

Mine are: People who have to have a dozen grooms for their horses and cant do anything for themselves.

And, People who are abusive to their horses.
I was at a horse show once and a lady's horse pinned his ears when she tightened the girth.

So she got really mad and tightened it so tight that when she got on the horse fell over and then she used the lunge whip to whip it up

Thorb, I'm with you on the gimmicks people use, but my pet peeve isn't that specific, is more general, its when people replace tools for competence.

I don't have any "proof" on this, but I'm willing to bet the same people who think they're God's gift to riding are the same ones who use tack to get their horse to comply and know the least about the horse himself. Horses are better off if those folks ride motorcycles. When will people learn that being in the process of asking questions and finding answers is of far greater value than knowing an answer. Those kind of people irritate the out of me

Those who punish the horse when it's rider error...you know the ones, didn't rope the cow so whip the horse.

And, people who let their horses rub and bump and get pushy with their heads. You know a horse can easily toss a person across the pasture with just their heads? Manners, manners, manners - get OUT of my SPACE!

Mine would be horses that have no ground manners. People just get on and ride and don't make sure that their ground manners are good. I have to walk them in and out everyday and it is no fun to have to correct someone else's laziness.

Barn Princesses (fortunately none at my current barn!)
The young ladies that Mom and Dad buy everything for (50k horse 60k truck and trailer to haul horse)
They are riding these made horses and somehow think that this makes them a good rider (and their horsemanship/horsehusbandry is terrible.)They'll leave their horse tied to the trailer all day at a show, or use him as a moveable grandstand, while they text the other princensses.
They love to make cutting remarks about other people's horses, tack or riding ability, yet have not ever actually accomplished anything that wasn't bought for them.

I might get tomatoes thrown at me for this one, but as some know, I work for a vet. I can't stand what the vet and I call carrot feeders. Not the people that love to treat their horses, but the ones that just think that their horses can do no wrong even when they are bitting and kicking at us trying to draw blood.

I had one woman tell me what an angel her pony was after she bit the out of me. I wasn't even standing within a foot of her, was just drawing up the coggins form. She reached across at least a foot and 1/2 to bite me.

Unfortunately we get those people all the time. What REALLY makes me mad is when they praise them for the bad behavior. "Oh, good girl, Angel. Is that mean vet trying to stick a needle in you? I would bite him too."

Plus, any kind of abuse, of course.

I hate when people who own b****y mares they can't ride or handle breed them!

I also can't figure out why people try to buy a green horse for a green rider as an "investment" or because they don't want to pay for a well trained horse. Instead they end up paying for more training or get burnt out etc. Especially if the horse is for a child, don't cheap out buy well trained! I'm not saying but your kid a $40k hunter pony just find the horse with the right training for the ability level and confidence level of the rider and everyone would be so much happier.

My biggest Pet Peeve are tire kickers. Just this year I've had one person make a verbal and written offer, which I accepted, thought the horse was sold and then never heard from him again. Several people didn't bother to show up or call. One lady emailed about one horse wanted a video seemed really interested, I made one never heard from her two months later wanted a video of a different horse that is pretty uncomparable to the first. Many many things like this. AHHHH. Ok I'm done.

snobby know-it-all horse people. Haven't encountered any here, fortunately but I've seen plenty at the barns I ride at!

If you think that's bad- I saw a lady once who put the chain thru the horses mouth and over his top gum- and she wasn't being gentle with it either- she was yanking him all over the place.

I hate that- and I hate drunk riders... It's not only stupid but dangerous.

My biggest pet peeve though (and not everyone will agree with me on this)... I can't stand it when people don't realize how dangerous horses are, and have no consideration for the "animal" in them that comes out sometimes. I trust myself around horses- but I will never COMPLETELY trust a horse.

Oh yeah- and people who really don't know what they're doing... and think they do.

Boy you all have some good ones! Mine's kinda small potatoes next to that, but it IS a peeve.

I hate to see sloppy tack. By that I mean, ends of straps not tucked in the second part of the buckle; ill-fitting bridle, like when the bit's just hanging in the horse's mouth (or the opposite, so tight it looks like the horse is gagging on it); the back cinch on a western saddle hanging a half a foot below the horse's belly. That type of thing. Besides being sloppy, it's just downright unsafe.

Boy, I'm with you on that one! I don't work for a vet now, but when I did. Geeze. I'll never forget we had one lady call us to come and castrate her colt, because she was boarding and he was 6 months old-they didn't allow stallions. Anyway, that is a whole other story... We get there and the colt had never even had a halter on! Wild, rotten and just an all out snot. He sure could take your hand off with a treat, but you couldn't get close enough for a halter, he'd turn and kick you. My boss almost turned around and left. He asked me what I thought, and I said I'd sure like to leave too. But, no one else is gonna mess with that dang monster-he's gonna end up hurting someone who's probably innocent, so we ended up doing it anyway. Since it was my idea, I said I'd catch the brat. It took me a while, but I finally did. He did however charge her additional for training... She was not happy about that.

You really run into some yahoos working for the vet, huh?

Actually I see that all the time, especially in showing stallions. However Id get really pissed to see a lady jerking around on it. It can be painful for sure! Personally Ive never had to put one in a horse's mouth as all of mine (stallion included) are easy to handle even in shows. If any of mine are getting so bad I have to put a chain in their mouth we go home, no sense in trying to show a horse thats getting that excitable. JMO

But it doesnt bother me nearly as much as over the nose. I know seems backwards, but when its in the mouth and used right it doesnt really get to me to see it. The second I see a chain over the nose it just irks me like no end.

My #1 pet peeve is people who own too many horses and can't afford to feed them all, so they are ALL starving.
Or they own them, OBVIOUSLY have plenty of money, fancy rigs, big trucks, expensive tack, etc. but are too ignorant to give their horses proper care (ex. annual shots neglected, horses are thin, farrier care inconsistent, don't do annual dental care, improper fitting tack), etc.
And won't accept any suggestions or help even after you explain the curb strap is waaaay too tight.
It kills me , RB

YAY i get to put my pet peeve out there!!!
I have been meaning to put a post up about this and this saves me from doing so..
NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP!!!!!!!!!!
Dont get me wrong..i KNOW there are people who do this and have wonderful horses and horses have great experiences from it..that is totally fine..

Its the ones that use the stick to beat the crap out of their horse, and use the rope halters to yank the crap out of their horse and call it "natural horsemanship"

local 4-h club does this..and i sat and watched for 2 hours as the leader beat the crap out of a 6 month old foal because it didnt disengage his back end or flex! but its ok because she is using "natural" methods

whew i feel better now!
