Itch Weed?

Hi all, My husband and I were out trail riding this weekend in a new area and my 6 yr old paint started acting really weird. We had to go off the trail a couple of times to get around fallen trees . He just stopped and started shaking his head, I got him to go a little farther and he stopped and started itching his front legs then tried lifting his hind legs and was just bouncing around. I dismounted and he tried rubbing himself in the brush.I checked his legs and there was nothing also no bugs a all. He was fine after that and we figured he got into something as we rode the rest of the way on the edge of the corn field with no problem. My husbands horse started acting up also just not as bad. My horse does have white legs and maybe more sensitive. anyone encountered anything like this? We were thinking it was itch weed but I didnt think horses would be effected by this.

Thanks Linda

We have itch weed here (I call it DEVIL weed) and I don't know if it affects animals(think it would) but I kneeled down in some one time and I thought my knee was going to burn up and that was thru my jeans.I couldn't find anything to stop the burning.,after that I said if I wanted someone to tell me something tie them down on it and they would talk really fast

Could be Chiggers. This is the time of the year that they are the WORST!!
My horse's legs will just blow up after an encounter, and it takes WEEKS to get the scabs off and legs healed. The itch usually subsides in a couple of days, but it takes considerably longer for the scabs/legs to heal.
Sometimes I've had to use TriHist Granuales (prescription), which is like Benadryl for horses.
I REALLY try to stay out of the tall grass around here from late August till about Oct. 1st just b/c they are so bad.
Good luck, Redboy
PS...., I don't know anything about Itch Weed or Devil's Weed, But CHIGGERS, I do, YIKES!

Itch weed

Thanks for the info although I think it may have been some kind of weed, itch or others as he does not have any bites or swelling or anything and he stopped trying to itch his legs within 5 minutes or so, after we got him to the edge of the corn field. Kinda of a stumper for me as he has never acted like this so i knew something was wrong Needless to say we will ride elsewhere this tiome of year anyway.

Thanks again Linda
