That can happen - no one steps up and takes over.. but eventually, you may see one that subtly rules the roost.. You just have some very nice, mellow and well integrated horses..
We have a couple of lead mares we can lend you if you want to shake things up.. ![]()

I also have an old mare that was always the bossmare, however now acts as the grandmother of the group. Everyone respects her, but she doesnt not rule the roost.
My big QH mare most definitely is the all mighty ruler. Even new horses dont challenge her... she screams witch. She is completely obsessed with our only gelding. He is no where near as "tough" but Doll lets him do whatever he likes as long as she can stand next to him. Then comes my three year old. She's good at just getting out of the way. In the pony pen theres not much of an established order. Of the three of them Sakari will get the best pickings, Stella holds her own good, and then Tulah just does her thing... however Saki moons over Tulah and wouldnt dream of telling her no. Thankfully we have a very good, well established herd. There is very rarely any fighting or commotion.

Every time I have removed the boss, which has been 5 or 6 times, it was the number 3 that eventually took over - not the number 2 as you might expect.
I don't know if that is normal, or if there is a normal, but that's what has happened in my herd...

I'll just give thanks that my herd just all rub along together
I think that they have just portioned out the leader role. Max gets to eat and drink first, which means that at the moment everyone else has to have water that he has washed his feet in Usually they either have access to an open dug out, or one of the many cattle hot bowls. Were they are at the moment I have to fill a big tub every day for them, Max takes great delight in putting his front feet in it when he has had his first drink.Appy Gilmore appears to make the 'let's move to a different place' decision, if they are on the move, rather than just grazing, he leads the way. Fancy is definitely the lowest on the pole, until she is in an interesting condition ![]() I've never seen any of them lay their ears back at another, no nipping or kicking at each other, I'll just keep hoping that the status quo is maintained

I am down to three horses now, two mares (Ellie 17 and Annie 5) and 6YO gelding, Shiloh. I can't figure out who's the boss. I thought it was the old mare, but the gelding can run both mares out of his stall (they have walk-ins). The young mare can run him out of the hay at the feeder, but the old mare doesn't (she probably could but I have never seen her try).
Someone once told me to watch the herd in the pasture to see who was "in charge" when something spooked them, as that was probably a better indicator than eating arrangements. Once the old mare was definitely the leader, sounding the alarm and leading them away from the horse eating hiker and his dog. The next time, it was the gelding, making sure the neighbor's haybine wasn't a horse killer and he was in the lead all the way to the barn. I'm thankful they all get along so great.

Screaming like a girl
![]() I've been taking Max and Appy out to work on them quite often, and Fancy and who ever remains are usually quite happy until the 'missing one' returns. Today I took Fancy out, because I had a huge job to do getting rid of all the burrs and tangles in her mane and tail, because there was so much machinery in the yard I couldn't work where I normally do, so tied her around the other side of the barn. Now madam was being a bit of a handful, so needed to concentrate on her, not helped by one of the boys continually crying like a girl because Fancy was missing, the boys came round to see who was being murdered, and I found out it was Appy running up and down and crying. Not sure if that was a leader crying for a missing mare, but sure sounded like a little boy crying for his mum ![]() ![]() ![]()

We have an odd dynamic. Miley rules the pasture, and the food, she will run Opie away from the hay every time (so he gets his own pile
