horse brand tracing?

can anyone give me advice on how i would go about finding info on a 'rescue' pony that has been branded w/ a #on his rump? the trader that i got this starved creature from told me horses that are from out of the country are always branded so that they can be traced to origin if disease pops up. has any one else heard of this? does anyone know if there are any pony-type organizations in the states that would hot brand a pony w/ a #? like the chincoteague pony's or what not? i was told this guy was shipped from new york in the last couple weeks. i couldn't leave w/out this poor thing. i will try to posts pics at a later date.

There is no federal requirement to brand horses/ponies who are imported. Likely the breeder branded the pony. Brands are registered by state and most are not available to publicly peruse. So you would have to send a brand search request to each state and some charge for this service. So basically, unless it's a well known brand - like an 8 on the left shoulder - then it's not going to offer up very much info for you.
