OTTBs, and where to find them.

As plans to buy land and build a house roll forward, that time that I've been waiting for (buying a horse) is drawing closer.
So I figured, hey! Why not look now, and get an idea of whats out there..

What I REALLY want, is to take in an OTTB to potentially compete in dressage.
Now, I've looked at CANTER, and I've checked Bits & Bytes Farm..

The downside of CANTER, is that the closest sale barn to me is in PA...
And as far as Bits & Bytes Farm goes, well... I didn't see 1 mare for sale.
(Hey, what can I say? My best horse was a mare.)
Not to mention B&B is located in GA..

So my question is, where in FL can you find OTTBs?
I just can't see myself traveling to GA or PA when there could be a nice OTTB right here in FL for me..

Any info is much appreciated, as always

Bits and Bytes does have a couple mares for sale, I just talked to her a few days ago. They are straight off the track with no training though.

I could be wrong, but I believe Spinningpeppy had a family member that got horses of the track for resell, and she's in FL. You may try to contact her.

This is one mare that needs a home from B&B. She has been priced down I believe to find a good home. SHe's 9, that may be too old for you.

Also at B&B

http://www.bitsandbytesfarm.com/prospects.htm

Titanium
Softly Soaring
Dancers
Sleepwalker

Those 4 are mares

I know you wanted something in Florida, but I just thought I'd let you know B&B does have a few!

I liked that last one too. She just needs a bit of white.

I saw one ad that had a pic of a horse trotting that had white on it's face .. funny, the other three pics of that horse didn't have a white splotch on their nose.

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association provides a state-by-state referral list:

If you're wanting a TRUE OTTB.....locate some racetracks near where you live and ask for a day pass to the backside. If you can't get a pass, see who you can talk to who can get you back there. Walk around and get the word out that you want a TB off the track and the lines will form.

The guy I get my OTTBs from does this AND has people call him because he has a rescue with over 150 horses off the track. He's in CA though

If you don't want one right off the track, then your best bet is just to search classified ads and what not.

Hmmm... Interesting information...
I'm willing to take either or..
I have always said, when my mare sells or is retired, I WILL adopt an OTTB.
Of course, getting one straight off the track wouldn't be a bad thing, as it will have 2+ quiet acres to graze on while it unwinds from the track life...
But if I can get a 3-5 year old either way, I'll take it..

*trots off to look up local tracks*

haha let us know how it goes. I'm in the middle of contemplating visiting a track in Eastern Nebraska to locate a fresh ottb to resell. I can get any horse I could dream of from my friend's rescue in CA, but the shipping is what will kill me....so I'm looking for something closer

You'll be amazed at whats lying in wait at the tracks. Specifically if you ask for one who is too slow ....beware of all the lame ones they'll offer. A mild bow is really easy to rehab though! (My avatar horse had a mild bow and I just let him sit in pasture for a year and look at him now haha)

Oh yes, I'm fully prepared to have people try to throw lame horses at me... Wont fly with me, that's for sure... I need a horse that will work, not a pasture puff... That's what our future "trail only because the boyfriend doesn't want to ride as much as me" horse is for! I know bows aren't as bad as they seem... A friend of mine has a Selle Francais who, in his competition days, bowed a tendon.. He's an old man now...

Hopefully if I try that, I'll be able to find something tall and slow.. Just so long as it's not so slow that my legs hurt by the end of the ride from trying to push them forward

I will ask my friend, who her trainer is in FL. She has sends just about all her Penn National Race Track horses down there for training. My avatar is 2 of her babies this year. I'm personaly not a fan of raceing, nothing against it, I just don't have anything for it either. Actually, I've never been to a horse race in my life and Penn National is just 15 min away. I'm sure the lady in Fl could hook you up with OTTB. There ARE down there, I just can't tell you exactly where, hopefully I'll get an aswere for you. OTTB have the biggest hearts. I always though the TB's were 'crazy', ESPECTIALLY OTTB's!! I was so ignorant on the breed I'm ashamed to say. But working with them pretty consistenly over the last year has been a BIG eye opener, they are truely incredable athlets, and have the most wonderful trusting hearts.

If I had a place to keep a horse right now, I definitely would have you keeping an eye out for me... We're looking to get some land here, shortly to build a house and barn on.. If we had the land and barn ready to go, I'd be sending you a message about that big grey you were talking about...

I've always heard that stereotype about TB's... That's why I love them.. They prove people wrong!! Actually, I owned a TB mare for 11 years, and absolutely adore the breed... Once I got more into the breed, I decided I wanted an OTTB for my next horse.. They do have huge hearts, which is what makes them such great competitors... But any connections you have are welcome.. Cause I'll be craving the company of a pony soon

Whenever you are ready, just let me know, I will hook you up, I always have them coming through here, and they are always nice. My clients don't keep banging on them until they don't have nothing left. A lot of time they got started late and haven't won by the time they are 5 so they can't run anymore down here so they have to find a different job.

KatieMae, call the lady in the PM I sent to you. Explain to her what your looking for, she says she ships down to FL frequently. Good Luck!

Opps, I just seen the above post from another Floridian, maybe you already have your connections. Good luck in whatever you decide.

I have had 3 OTTB! One of the gals I have now is off the track, trained but unraced because she wasn't fast enough. Could have fooled me, she sure can run in the pasture when she wants to. She most likely could be my most athletic horse. My 3 yr old and 10 yr olds are green, so time will tell.

I too love my TB mares
