Slug Remedy? [In feed]

Regardless if the bucket is closed and the lid is tight the slugs still manage to get into the grain... Needless to say this is really starting to bug me. I throw out the grain that has the slime on it, so in a week I probably throw out a scoop from each horse. My dad said to throw some beer in the grain, apparently it'll kill them?

Anyone have any ideas that are non-toxic to horses? I thought salt, but then I'd worry about the actual slug making the grain bad.

Clean your buckets and grain bins, then salt around the outside bottom on the floor. Better yet, place your food bin down into a larger container that has a salted bottom.

Also, beer is a bad idea...they love beer. You could use small bins with beer in them set around the floor as a diversion trap, refilling and cleaning them out as it fills.

Also, copper stripping is said to be a repellant as it is said to have a small electrical charge.

Awesome, couldn't have asked for a more informative answer. Thank you VERY very much

Happy slug catching and repelling!

Although, it is quite odd with all they could be getting into...just goes to show ya!

Yeah the salt gets them like a nasty acid bath.
I remember as kids-up in WA state we used to steal the salt shakers all the time to go kill slugs. LOL
You can make a beer trap-get a slope sided little cereal type bowl and put beer in it. they climb in after the beer and then cannot get out and drown.
they do love beer

I use to do that as well.

They curl up and die right quick that way!

We put out cool whip containers with beer to catch our slugs and couldn't figure out why the beer was disappearing and we had no slugs (they were supposed to climb in and drown). That was until we found our barn cats passed out under the maple tree in the yard.

If you are sealing up the container good and tight, it's odd that they are still able to get in there. Have you tried a different container (like a plastic trash can with a tight lid?)

Salt works, but you still have to deal with those dead little bodies all over. Bleah. And we tried copper and it does repel them. Then we tried chickens. Problem solved.

We may have to try those chickens haha. I know my mom wants some .

The feed buckets we have are the green plastic ones, we've had them for about 15 years I think... so the lids probably aren't a sufficient as they had been at one point. I have yet to find a slug in the grain, but they leave the lovely slim everywhere. I will try the beer that's for certain, if it keeps them away, then why not The buckets are inside a shed, but again, nothing is really sealed tight.

The only thing I've ever found alive in the bucket was a mouse... pathetic, huh? That time was my fault, I left the lid open and thankfully all there was left was a scoop. Of course the mouse just sat there and stared at me. It was kinna cute because all I did was lower a scoop and he climbed in and I dumped him outside, gave him a handful of the ruined grain and I haven't seen him since. But those slugs are hardcore :P I guess they got tired of the cat food.

I would rather have leetle dead slug bodies around than a bunch of chicken poo all over my barn-I hate that!
I had that problem until about 3 weeks ago-they were not even my chickens. They were free range chickens who ranged here from next door.
They ate my melons all up and THAT is when we had yet another talk with neighbor. They are now penned up.

Haha, I just got that image in my head from AFV bird special or something where an older lady and a small boy are being chased by this goose, the woman flips over backwards and takes the kid down with her lol.

Its the worst. I dont know what I ever did to offend birds but we just dont get along. Ive YET to me a single bird that would actually be nice to me. My mom has two cockatiels, they bite me.. my friend has an Umbrella Cockatoo... she goes out of her way to attack me literally. Ive never had much luck. My mom used to have 4 geese too, they always chased me every chance they got.
