Help.. Big Question

It is basically a what would you do...

If you came across your dream horse, had the oppertunity to buy her, but the big thing is you would have to sell a few horses to do so... Would you do it.

It would depend on how attached I was to the few horses and I would defenilty see the dream horse in person maybe it isn't as great in person or maybe it is and that it would make selling the other a easier decision.

I agree that a lot depends. If I met the dream horse, and they truly were my dream horse, and my other horse(s) were marketable horses that had good chances of finding great homes, then I would probably consider it. The thing is, it takes time to sell horses, and said dream horse could sell anytime in there unless the seller is willing to work with you - so in reality, it's kinda a decision you need to make BEFORE you find the dream horse because there are too many "what if's" if you NEED to sell the others in order to get said dream horse!

Would depend on what the horses I was having to sell in order to get it were.

But chances are unless I was very attatched to the other couple horses I would likely sell(if I could find good loving homes that would take care of them properly)and buy the dream horse(after going and seeing several times and making sure it actually was my dream horse that is)

Well First let me clarify a few things.........

I do not financially need to sell any of my horses to buy this horse. So that is not an issue.

The horse is 3 years old and not been started under saddle yet.. I have no issue with that... Clean slate... excellent bloodlines conformation and color. I will met her this weekend.

The horses that I would be selling, one of them I am very very attached to.

The horses that I would put up for sale are not my riding horses, Belle Chief and Blaze and Liberty and Prize, will never let my property for sale...

I did not clairfy that it was not a financial situation to sell the others, it is a HUBBY situation But I agree, I have 11 horses now and really do need to think about down sizing a little...

My four horses rolled into one would probably create my dream horse.......would I sell the four to get the one?.....not likely.
Would you abandon any of your children to help just one achieve greatness?
That;s what it seems like to me, and I know that is just IMO.

Because each of my beloveds is my dream horse ...that's why I have 4. Each one brings something so unique to our relationship that it outshines any negative attribute they may have......and I could never forfeit that special something I have with each one in order to "upgrade".
besides, how would I feel, if they wanted to replace ME with their "dream owner"????

First they are not being abandoned, and no I do not feel like they are.. Not a fair assessment there... As stated, I have my riding horses and my 31 yo that I have had for 18 years. My riding horses will never leave. So no I am not abandoning any of them, actually whether or not this horse comes here the others will be sold.

Sorry, but horses are not humans. I'm very attached to mine and sometimes call them my 4 legged kids, but that is with the understanding that they are not children.

Cameo, it all depends on how attached you are to the other horses and how easy it would be for you to place them, especially since you have already met the dream horse and are pretty sure its what you want. If you have a couple horses in your field that you would be ok placing in good homes, then by all means - go for it! You could cut back your feed bill a bit and get your dream horse. The problem comes in when you are super attached to all of your horses and it would break your heart to see any of them go, or they are horses that are going to be extremely hard to find a home for due to either health or behavioral issues. Then you might want to reconsider not getting that dream horse at this time.

Hard decision, but good luck!

Thank Bandit.... One of them will be hard to let go and if he doesn't sell then so be it.. As stated Belle (my heart) Chief (hubbies horse) Blaze (my daughters) Prize ( my 31 yo that I have had for 18 years) and Liberty will not leave my care what so ever. They are forevers...

1 is a mare hubby bought for me and I just do not click with her
1 is a mare that is hubbies and he doesn't click with her
1 is a gelding that I am selling for my sister
1 is a gelding that I do love very much

All are healthy, young, trained well and will be easy to place in hopefully forever homes. You know though I had to put down a month ago a horse that I so loved in a short time, that If I could have, he would not be gone. Since then, I realize that these other horses are sitting there and are not getting used.. Then I ask myself, what is better for them, staying here and getting fed and loved or going to someone that will actually use them the way that was intended and love them and feed them.

Keep in mind though, that I am prepared to keep all if necessay.

Well I've just done a one in one out deal, so I sort of know how you feel. That choice though was fairly easy, I had someone interested in my mare, that I just had never bonded with, just when I found Mr Gilmore, who I felt an immediate connection to, so she went and he came.

With my herd now, if someone offered me my dream horse, and finance wasn't the issue, I don't know what I would do, Max has always been set for life here, it's early days with Mr Gilmore, but if things keep building as they are he is never leaving.

Fancy I don't know, at the moment we really aren't a team, but I really want to work with her, and I really want to breed another foal from her, so I would have to consider if she would be better with someone else.

It's so difficult weighing up those head versus heart decisions, in the end it usually works to toss a coin, while it's in the air you usually decide which side you want it to land.............that should be your decision

Well it seems the answer is pretty clear. If you are not clicking with those horses, might as well let them find someone they will click with. The last gelding may be a hard one - but if you place 3, do you really need to place him too?

Cameo, what does your heart say?

I think you already know.

You detailed that you have four horses that could be finding their "dream owners" with your assistance. You are a devoted human who wouldn't let them go to just anybody. So it's not really that you HAVE to "get rid" of 4 in order to bring on your "dream." You're really just discovering that you have different goals than these four horses fulfill. You're not shoving them aside, you're taking a very considerate view of their potential and their needs and realizing that you might not be what they need. And now, faced with new potential, you have the catalyst to make that happen.

In short, I think you should work to find the 4 fantastic homes with people who will think of them as "dream horses" and go ahead and welcome the new one into your life.
