Question about Fee to Haul Horse

For those who have recent experience with having a horse hauled or those who haul horses for a fee -- what is the going rate?

I am looking into buying a horse that is about 2 hours away (120 miles) and the owner stated in her ad that transport is available for an additional fee. When I asked what her fee would be, she said she really didn't know what the going rate was and asked if I could research it a bit. She said she would do the same. She said she's not in it to "make money" but just to cover gas and time.

Do you calculate the fee by round trip or just loaded miles? Man I can't wait until I can get my own trailer!

This is how I would calculate it: average of 10 miles to a gallon for 220 miles (roundtrip) = 22 gallons at $3.60 gallon = $79.20 (rounded up to $80). Then add $10 an hour x 4 hours (roundtrip) = $40.

$80 + $40 = $120 -- would that be a fair price?

Thanks for any comments.

Valerie

I just had my mare Stormy hauled from about 2 hours away, and the going price here was $250. But the gas in California is a little bit higher.

$120 sounds a little low to me, though.

We have a guy here who charges $1 per mile (NOT loaded mile) and I think he is too expensive. I think what you are proposing to pay her sounds really fair.

Depending on what she's driving and pulling, 10 miles to a gallon may not be accurate, she may get less if she has a big truck or trailer. She also may have diesel wich is well over $4.00 a gallon.

The people that delivered my mare from SC in Feb, just charged me for gas here and back. She gave me the reciepts so I knew she was being honest. It was right at $200 and it was only 5 hours round trip.

She said she has a 3 horse GN trailer. I'm not sure about diesel or gas. I would have to adjust if it were diesel. I'm going out to look at the horse this evening ... so I can find out more detail then. I just want to get a ballpark figure so I don't offer too much more (or less) than I should.

We have a big Dodge Ram (hemi) and hauled two full size Harley Davidson's to Sturgis last year. A horsetrailer and one horse probably weighs a little more than an open trailer and two HDs, but we averaged about 13 miles to a gallon so that's where I came up with the 10.

This is all good info .... keep the comments coming. It really helps to get the perspective of others.

Oh yeah....and here's the horse I'm going to go see too...

$1.00 loaded mile is on the low side of the going rate. $120 for her to bring her to you is too low, IMO.

I think $120 sounds more than fair for someone not trying to make $$ on the trip.............

I wouldn't do it for less than $300, JMO! I have to think about the fuel, my time, applicable tolls, and wear and tear on my equipment. At the moment, it cost's me just short of $200 to fill up my truck. hauling 2 motorcycles and a horse are different things. Live weight and stationary weight are different.

Well it's actually 110 miles but I decided to round up a little bit and got confused on which number I was rounding up. Sorry - not perfect.

Where I am trailering for 2 hours costs anywhere from $240-$400 depending on who you get to trailer, type of trailer/truck it is, how the horse trailers. Some haulers also will put trailering equipment on your horse if your not there, price is sometimes extra and some include it and others wont do that at all if you want your horse wrapped etc you have to so it.

So 120 sounds low to me I would say offer more like 200

Honestly, for that long of a trip, 120 seems low. I think 200 to 300 is more reasonable. I have a 3H GN, and a diesel truck, and go through about 1/2 tank on a 30 mile round tip to my show grounds - so it's actually less than 10 miles to the gallon - those trailers are not aerodynamic! And that was hauling one horse.

So, at 9 miles to the gallon, at diesel prices, you're already at a little over $100. Plus the four hours of driving time, loading and unloading, etc, it will pretty much be an all day affair, so even at only $10/hour, we're up to $150+ bare minimum. This covers nothing for expenses in the line of wear and tear on the vehicles, etc.

Last time I had my horses hauled by someone else, she charged me $1/mile both ways, and that was before fuel prices shot up so bad - so $1/mile both ways seems more than reasonable right now.

ETA: Hauling a trailer also takes a lot longer than it would driving in your car due to slower speeds, needing more time for corners, starting, stopping, etc, so if it takes you four hours in your car, it will probably take at least an extra hour hauling.

The per mile charge is also based on "If" there are more horses going or coming from that direction....the going rate for transporting horses around KY and TN is $2.50 per mile so I would say that was too cheap for the haul. However, the owner may not be in the transport business and allow you just to pay for fuel and bypass all the labor, time, wear and tear, etc....just depends.....it's really not that far to go....heck, we advertise horses for sale and ship them for $1.65 per mile but the first 100 miles are free...so it varies....but you asked the going rate and it is $2.50 permile....which comes out to be (one-way) $300...

Thanks for all the comments .... I'll tuck them away for next time as I decided this isn't the horse for me. I just don't think she would fit into what I'm looking for. It is interesting to see the varied responses though.
