weird neck sweats?????

i just "rescued" a mare. She is thin, beat up and just needs some tlc. The weird thing is that when she eats her neck gets sweaty on both sides? Its not the entire neck just along the lower muscle area. It also looks like she is have spasms while she is eating in that area,,,, anyone heard of this or had this happen to them? I will have to have her teeth done, cause she drops her food. Also her feet are in rough shape, but once i get most everything in order, she will be a nice looking horse. She is super sweet too!

I would have the Vet look at her ASAP, especially given her current condition. Poor girl.

Is there any chance she is HYPP positive? Odd sweating patterns are one symptom.
Just in case-I might change the feed-till I had her checked.
Are you feeding sweet feed?

I think I'd have a vet ASAP for that - it is pretty odd to do that, and I would imagine there is something going on.

I'd also make sure I had her on pretty basic feed for now (grassy hay only) till you figured out what's going on.

My TB Gelding who was also VERY thin when i got him, does sweat, in the neck area when eating, but I have never seen the spasm.

Its been 2 years now since i got him, and he is of normal healty weight, but still sweats when eating.

I have never asked the vet about it though

nerve damage can cause the sweating too. Do you ground feed her? If so, perhaps you could try elevating her feed a little and see if it still happens. I agree with calling the vet to be sure though, particularly if she is at risk of HYPP.

ok,, i found out that she is hypp n/n. And i am getting her teeth done tomorow, so hopefully some of this will help figure her out more. I still cant get pics up on here, ggrr. I was watching her really close tonight and its more of a spasm in her chest, so it might be her teeth pinching her cheeks???? We will have to see, hoping to get the farrier out tomrow and then the vet, can only do one thing at a time

If I may-if she is a rescue how were you able to find the status? do you have paperwork showing her test results?

well, she came from a farm that has 25-30 horses, which most are thin. It is an acqaince(sp) of mine, so i asked her about taking one horse off her hands to help out. This is NOT one of my horses,, mine are in my avatar.

Do you have proof that she is HYPP? Becuase people can say one thing and it could be a lie. It REALLY sounds like HYPP.

Poor baby. She's chewing that good food and swallowing it. Using chewing-swallowing-muscles that prob. had not much food to chew-up for a long time. Those working muscles give off heat and a horse sweats to cool working muscles.

Sounds good for the horse that she is getting those eating muscles a nice work-out

If she's all twitchie-sweatie around muscles that have nothing to do with the eating process...then I'd be more concerned. Could always do a hypp test to confirm what you were told.

They love that triple crown...

Might be worth the test just to be on the safe side unless you have test results that describe the horse you have that clearly show it belongs to her and not another horse.

How do you have proof that this horse is truly N/N?
I would really spend the few bucks to get a HYPP test. Sweating is one thing, but tremors? I'd be asking the vet some questions.

Could be HYPP, or Cushing's - one of the symptoms is random sweating on the neck, back and loins...I've seen Radar have ''the sweats'' before he was on Pergolide.

I'm not familiar with Triple Crown but if it has pellets in it you may want to soak the feed a little before you give it to her. We have a yearling that spasms when trying to swallow pellets. Wetting it did the trick. I hope her problems are as simple as this.
