Grooming Question? Re: Manes

Howdy When I first got "Cruiser" , he had a really thick beautiful black mane! Since I have had him, It has thinned out alot. Everytime I brush it out (which isn't very often, because I dont want him to loose hair) the brush is full of mane! If I dont brush it he gets corn rows. I don't know what to do. Darn if I do, Darn if I don't! Any advice

I would say just constantly condition it. For a while I would condition my horses tail A LOT and it would feel nice, but Im slacking now haha. I would shampoo, then condition, then rinse it a little, not all of the conditioner out. Then I just bought mane and tail spray condition, it seems to be ok. I always thought cowboy magic was the best, so i reccommend that, and instead of a brush put the condition and if you can cowboy magic and comb through with your fingers. Hope this helps, good luck! Oh yeah i also hear MTG(mane tail groom) is great for stuff like that.

I have that problem with my TWH who has a wavy mane and tail. I found a type of showsheen that didn't contain silicone. It worked great, lasts about week in the mane if kept outside. I have had trouble finding it lately though.

You might could try some type of human Leave-in conditioner like Infusium 23 or a childs detangler.

I love the Cowboy Majic Detangler. I love a long mane but I fought the corn row thing to.. It makes the hair sharft really slick and easy to comb through but it also helps prevnt the tangling that starts the Corn rows,
MTG is a good one to ecncourage growth and may actually help it stop falling out. I use a bottle with a nozzle to direct it directly at the roots. (like one you would use to color your hair with)

Ditch the brush, get a mane comb and a big bottle of detangler/conditioner. Spritz lots of the detangler into the mane a while before you will start combing, let it soak into all the knots and then comb it out. The first time will be a pain, but as long as you keep the mane conditioned, it will stay easy after that.

I wash my horses manes once a week, and they always stay in braids. I french braid Stormy's because I'm trying to train it to stay on one side and she rubs out regular braids pretty fast, but I regular braid Mac's. I have had Mac for about a year and his mane has grown about 6 or 7 inches.

I would say don't brush it...if anything comb it. The brush will tear it out more. Also don't use silicone based products because it not only drys the hair but causes breakage (even though it looks shiny). Ultra Bloom is a GREAT supplement for the hair, hooves and overall horse. Try some MTG-Main Tail Groom-it will grow the hair back for you

Ditch the brsuh and only run your fingers through his mane. If you *need* to use a brush, don't use a comb, use a soft brush. Try putting some MTG or Healthy Haircare on his mane at the roots and work it in. Braiding might also help.

You can put all the stuff on the mane that you want, but its only going to do a certain amount of good. Corn Oil in your horse's grain will do wonders and help from the inside. I gave my 17hh horse a Tablespoon or two a day until I sold her.

Personally I like the cheap leave-in conditioners like Mane'N'Tail. Only brush if you put something on the mane first, NEVER brush without!!! Only use a human brush for a while! Those horse brushes and combs are perfect for breaking and damaging hair.

Always always always start brushing the ends first, BEFORE you start working upwards.

I use a mixture of conditioner, baby oil and water. It is cheap and does the job. Just spray it on the mane until damp let set a minute or so and then comb.
