cribbing strap

I finally got the cribbing strap for my TB Caleb in the mail today, hoping he will gain the last of his weight when he can't suck wind anymore. Can anyone tell me how tight it has to be for it to work without choking him?

I can't offer you advice on their application as I don't agree with them so don't use them, but it may help if you say what kind of strap you got...there are many different kinds.

cribbing strap

What type did you get? I have a cribber as well, and it is a frustrating vice. I tried the miracle collar, but he always seemed to crib through it, unless the front strap was incredibly tight, in which the strap split his skin in front of his ears. I tried a fuzzy, but wasn't happy with the way they fit in general.

I ended up using the nutcracker type, and I started it with it not so tight, and I would wait to see if he cribbed and if he did, I would tighten it one hole, until we found the right fit. We have been using it for years, but I remove it everyday while I am doing chores, to clean it and make sure there were no rubs.

It is kind of a trial and error process.

Good luck.

It may vary depending on the horse. My mare is a cribber - she only wears her collar if she is in the stall overnight (rarely) - and as long as I have it on her so that is fairly tight - she will not crib. Her previous owners had it on her VERY tight. I also put on the fluffy protectors so that the collar does not rub or leave a mark on her skin.

One of our horses uses a Miracle Collar. It has to be on fairly snug to work.
I would start out putting it on snugly and go from there. If he's still cribbing, you know you have to tighten it. Gradually tighten it until he's not cribbing (but still breathing).

I have the leather kind, with 2 straps. I think the aluminum one looked like a torture instruments. The interesting thing is, I put it on him for the first time yesterday, and he didn't even try to crib. Usually the first thing he does when going back into the pasture is hook his teeth somewhere and suck air.
Makes me almost think like he's worn one before, in his former life. He know when he can't do it.

We have a new boarder that is a cronic cribber ~ he is on pasture board and he will grab a tree to crib???

She brought him in with out advising me he was a cribber but when I saw him and told her he had to wear a collar she told another boarder that is why she was kicked out of her last barn

I finally purchased a collar for him myself as it was cheaper than the fence boards and posts he was going through!!!!

He really is a sweet boy but he is still cribbing with the collar on snug ( it;s the aluminum spoon type)

Kendra, you can teach a horse to crib appropriately on a rubber board if what you are worried about is your property. You just have to have the boarder take the time to paint everything else with something icky until he learns that is the only place to crib. This will save his teeth and your property.
