TWH & Games

I've begun training patterns to my TWH. He is picking them up nicely.
We've had a 9 second time on speed dash, and 17 second time on pole weaving..did not run him in barrels yet as he is not ready for it.

So, I decided to look around online and see if I can find info from other folks on how well they've done w/ their TWH in the games area. Personally, I am looking at riding only local shows not any bigtime such as NBHA.. but as I looked around online, I found a breeder's site that claims this: "Many TWH are used for sport professionally. Some of the top Barrel Racing and Cutting horses in competition today are TWH."
Really? I thought those disciplines were primarily ruled (top competitors) by Qtrs and Paints ..never once heard of this before now...I don't follow cutting at all, I do follow somewhat on the Barrel Racing scene...wondering if any of you out there know if this statement has any truth to it?

My g/f here just came back from TN last month and her son (12yo) won the TRIPLE CROWN YOUTH ALL AROUND on his TWH. He did everything including the games. He worked so hard every day and it paid off !!

At our local CGA (California Gymkhana Association) district there are a number of people that compete on their TWH (and other gaited breeds). There's no reason these breeds cannot compete, especially at the local levels! I can't say that I've heard of "top competitors" being on too many TWH, I would have trouble seeing a TWH having the massive power requirements to pull off the speeds and turns needed at that level, but for local, even state level, I don't see why they can't do a great job!

I have used my TWH for the local level gymkhanas -- mind you I am not competing for anything, just out having a bit of fun. My barrel time is roughly 34 seconds (don't laugh) and my pole time is a bit higher. I have also done the flag race with him as well. I also use him for my riding lessons and we are doing a bit of ground pole work and we will try jumping a bit later. Am thinking I would like to complete an endurance or competitive trail ride next year as well. Oh and apparently, he was broke to drive as well but I haven't tested that theory out yet because I don't have a cart and harness. I have also heard of TWH's that jump as well.
Don't know if that statement has much truth to it, but I do know that my dear little TWH can "haul a$$" when he wants to. I mean, he's still not as fast as the quarter horse I ride with, but he really doesn't "know" that he is allowed to go fast yet .
I am thinking that because they use their hind end doing their running walk, that they may have a lot of untapped power .
You know -- if your horse has the talent for the sport or discipline you want to do, breed doesn't really matter.
