All about Thoroughbreds!

Alright, I Own and 8 or 9 year old OTTB Mare. She's such a sweetheart and i would never ever sell her. So when i was riding her tonight, i came up with an ideal for a thread.

Tell me all about your Thoroughbreds- Anything you want, from the way they ride, to how they act, how you got them, special moments.

I want to know all i can about the breed so i can become better at riding my Asinaway now that My beau has fully handed her to me and i will be riding her more.

http://www.pedigreequery.com/asinaway

This is her pedigree.

This is my Darling Asinaway. I have owned her for a year since July. For those who know, she has given me the courage back when i had fallen back in Fall of my Gelding. She's very laid back for a Thoroughbred although she can be hyper at times. She has a smooth trot. I don't know much about her history, except that she raced a few times before going lame. She was then sold to a women who used her for parades and such. Then she sold her to i don't know, who then sold her to the guy i bought her off. She has had quite a past from what i heared but she will forever have a happy home with me, and will no longer ever have to be sold. She allows anyone on her, and is gentle with children.

Tell me all about your beautiful Thoroughbreds, don't hold back.

Thank you.

Jennifer V.

Now, bear in mind I've never owned a horse before Tango. Also bear in mind I'm madly in love with my mighty beastie. And lastly, bear in mind that I know nothing about anything...

Tango, my TB, is an amazing horse. Strong willed, determined, not always honest, scary-smart, loving, kind, mostly gentle with people and kids.

His most difficult aspect is he thinks he's smarter than me and makes better decisions while riding.

His most amazingly wonderful aspect is that he's very smart, and the better rider I become, the better trained he gets - even without training.

My most frustrating thing with him is his food aggression, followed closely by his balkiness when deciding he knows more than me.

My most enjoyable thing with him is his sense of humor, and his willingness to trust 'the mama' (me).

The hardest part of working with Tango is that he actually does know more than me. The best part about working with Tango is that he 'teaches' well (although not always gently).

His name is Tango; I call him my Fancypants Sweetcheeks or Beanhead on 'those' days. But he always nickers at me when I get to the barn, and he always wants his lovies.

Again, I am no expert, not by a long shot. But he's my boy, he's a TB, and I love him and he loves me.

Best-
Noni

A few years ago my aunt bought me an OTTB. I chose the horse though when I was 13..we both didnt know much about them. I learned they have large hearts, and are too smart for their own good. he was a beautiful dark bay, black in winter, 16.2hand gelding. His name was Night Time Gold, winner of 11 sprinting races. One thing I learned about Thoroughbreds is consistency, with my friends thoroughbred I noticed you have to ride her on a consistent basis if you want the best out of her. They are beautiful horses, not for everybody, but you do tend to find that special sweet one :]

I have never owned a TB in my life, so owning one is a whole new experience for me. I have owned her a year in June. I am more a QH person, but she has made me also love TB.

Cherokee Stripper is her name, but does not act like one though towards the geldings

I love this girl to death, she is loving, strong willed, alive, very calm but she's a TB so she has her crazy moments. We are like two peas in a pod, we click like we have been together all of our lives.

She can be so patient with me and when she acts crazy, I try to with her. She is my heart and soul.

She was actually given to me as a 4-H project and so basically she was a tax deductible

She has raced in her life and only won one race, I dont know how she got to georgia but she came from Kentucky. I don't know much about her past but I think sometimes when she is acting crazy, those racing memories are going through her head.

Here she is....

This was our first ride together, all I had then was a western saddle

I own a 10 year old OTTB and I love him to death! He raced for 7 years and won nearly all of his races! His name is Indiana Affair, but I call him Indy

He was a stallion for 8 years then he was bought for a VERY large sum. He was then sold to someone who sold him to me... He has the greatest personality ever!

Unfortunately I don't have any pics of him that are updated

I have 3 OTTBs and don't want anything else EVER (well except a Holsteiner...but we have to be realistic here HAHA)

Elton is now 19 yrs old and I've had him since he was 6. He's 15.2 and tiny and compact, but he was my 3'3 jumper for all those years. He hardly ever lost a class either. He is super sweet on the ground and a lover. Under saddle,,,,,ummm lets say that I don't let hardly ANYONE ride him because he is unpredictable, crazy, a bit senial and overall SUPER FUN haha (getting a picture for my personality here??)

Fiona is now 7 and I got her straight off the track as a 3 year old. I've done any and all training with her and she is successfully competing at 3'6 jumpers and should still have more in her to move up to at least 3'9. We'll see how it goes. She is barely 16 hands and the VERY typical red headed mare. She is a doll at home, but traveling, she is the biggest WENCH I have ever met, but WOW is she on her game when she acts like that. She's so cute

Dawn is now 8 and I got him right off the track as a 6 year old because he had mildly bowed his tendon. I gave him a full year off even though he TRULY only needed about 5 months rest. I put him into fairly intensive training and currently he's showing at the 3'-3'3 level. He has free jumped 4'3 while his body was clearing hte 5'6 standards. This horse has some major talent and I just KNOW he will take us pretty high. He is a determined sole who knows his job. He is extremely serious about his work. He is a TOUGH ride. One wrong move and you've lost him...so you have ot not make that wrong move. He is STRONG and big at 16.2 hands and built close to a warmblood. He really is just an amazing presence.

I just love the TB breed. I've ridden many more than just my three and each one is completely different, but the commonalities in each one is that they want to please YOU and do it right. They want your companionship and if you don't give that to them, they are saddened by it. They have amazing heart...more heart than any other breed I've ever worked with.

Elton last summer (he is 100% retired now):

Fiona:

Dawn:
the infamous 4'3 jump....the pole is down there somewhere...I was more impressed with him clearing the standards!

He is in my avatar doing 3'9 as well.

i just recently bought an ottb one month ago . was rescued from a kill auction. why he was there i have no clue what a shame . he is only 3 years old cute as a can be ,super sweet and breed very good. he follows you around like a big puppy loves to love you and super safe and quite under saddle. he came to me about 200 or so pounds under weight and still has more to go. maybe he will be diffrent after all the weight is on but some how i think he will just stay the same. i have let even beg kids ride him . he takes care of them great. since owning him i wish i had more room to rescue some more . he is one of the nicest horse i have ever owned. does anyone out there with a ottb have any sug on how to get the weight on this guy a little faster?

Those are some beautiful Thoroughbreds! I especially have a weakness for Chestnut mares. But then again I'm in love with the breed itself. My next horse with certiantly be a Thoroughbred thats how impressed i am with the breed.

But keep it coming guys!

DARLA5711- When i first got my OTTB she was a bit under weight from the geldings she was placed out with never letting her graze properly and he says he fed her a lot of grain but I'm doubting it. I'm not expert and there are alot of people who can tell you better then me. But for my mare i fed her good quality grain, a scoop at night and good quality hay. Also she was on pasture, and that helped get weight on her. It was a challenge at first but nows she a good weight and she may be a little over weight from being on full pasture this year.

I absolutely love my TB mare Dancing Dixie (we call her Dixie) she was never raced, I bought her in Feb from an auction and she is so sweet, extra gentle with the little ones. I trail ride, and have yet to find anything to spook her I have ridden her past motorcycles, 4 wheelers, golf carts, barking dogs, she has been down busy roads. She has the build of a QH, nice broad chest, round hind quarter, carries herself wonderfully very much like a QH too, keeps her head low, she is very mellow on the ground and in the saddle. Only vice is she don't like to have her back feet picked up. She is a chestnut with a white star on her forehead, 16.1h, and weighs in at 1250lbs.

I brought an OTTB over to my farm to try it with intentions to buy.. he NEVER listened to me once in the ring and when we loaded in him up in another person's trailer he waited until the ramp was being put up and then freaked out and slid under the butt bar (this is a 16 hand horse!). He was given some ace to calm him down, he had a reaction to it, and then proceeded to try to rear up and flip himself over... Turns out he had a history of doing that in the warm-up paddock when the jocky was mounting up!

On the flip side...

I also tried a 16 year old OTTB that was the sweetest and smoothest gentleman I have ever ridden... It all depends on the horse..

Ok, so these aren't MY TB's, but they are my stories about them!

I got my TB Caleb last July, he was actually posted on HT under QH, the lady had no clue what she had. He was horribly underweight last year, a walking skeleton, and he still needs some more weight. He is registered, his real name is Sorry (I expected something a little bit fancier!), he was born April 16, 1995, in New Jersey. He raced for 7 years.
After that, I have no clue what happened to him but now he is here to stay. After a rough few months he turned into a wonderful horse, even beginner safe. My 8 year old son likes to ride him, he's almost a push button horse. He is not constantly glued to your side, will come and check if you have a treat and then leave again.
I just got him a cribbing strap, he's a horrible cripper! Hopefully now he will gain the last 100 lbs. that he still needs.
BTW, he's a very dark bay.

This is my 25 year old OTTB gelding The Reverend, otherwise known as "Rev." He is still going strong and still shows and wins with my students. He is great for nervous riders just starting to show. I have competed Rev in hunters, jumpers, eq., dressage and combined training.
This picture is of myself, next to Rev with my boyfriend riding. He is a novice rider, but "the boys" seemed to have hit it off well!
I started riding Rev when he was 8 and started competing him. He was quite the horse at that time...not what you would usually put an eighth grader on....but my trainer let me ride him..now I wonder if it was against her better judgement. Then I bought him when he was 14. He is my once in a life-time horse. He is truly my best friend. I can't even begin to imagine my life without him.
Rev's registered name is "Potlatch." He was by Chumming out of Light Up the Sky.

I've always owned tb's and used to buy regularly off the track. I have one mare I'd never part with and now she's a baby maker and I love her babies. I love that they are all so much like her. the tb in general is athletic and forward and I like a forward horse. They tend to have a lot of heart and a lot of mental stamina. I like the sensitivity especially compared to the warmbloods and draftx I ride a lot. They are truly a sport horse and have always been my favorite breed.

I have owned my TB gelding for 4 years and he is wonderful. I was use to saddle horses and riding western for the most part. Dancer has been my best friend, psychitrist(?) and a shoulder to cry on. His registered name is Rani Day Music and he is 15. I love his canter,it is so smooth. At times he can be a stinker but for the most part he is wonderful for me-a 55 year old. My 11 year old granddaughter can also ride him and jumps small jumps on him. When I first got him I rode him western but have since gotten an English saddle and ride him every chance I get-he is at my daughter's and now that I have another vehicle I can get down there more to ride. I rode him last Saturday with my granddaughter who rode her mom's paint gelding, and I am already hoping to be able to get down there this week after I get paid to ride him some more, provided the weather is better-it is humid here. I like the idea of a TB thread!

I use Ulta Bloom! It's great...put 100 pds on my TB that was a little underweight. I give her 1/2cup at night with her feed.

My second horse, when I was 15 was an OTTB mare. We never clicked, she broke my nose bridling her and in hindsight was just too much horse for me at the time. Plus I did not have the support of a more experienced instructor. I swore I'd never have another!
Since then I've had several TB, mares and gelding and loved them all. They have so much heart, my most recent was the energizer bunny, you could not tire her out.
They were all smart, opinionated and did not suffer fools easily. Once you had their trust though, they would do anything for you. More sensitive to ride and handle then the average horse, they teach you to be precise and kind with your aids. My last gelding knew what I wanted as soon as I thought about it and would anticipate my every move.

You all have some wonderful TB's.

Now i have a question. I want to transfer my name onto her papers, and i have no ideal how to even do this. I hope that made since. She was bred and raced in Ohio and the last person's name that is on her papers was the guy who bought her from the breeder at her first race on 6-29-02 i am guessing from reading her papers.

Some people told me that i need to contact the last name on her papers. Another person told me if i do not get my name put on her papers as her owner, this guy can just come and take my mare saying he is the owner since my name is not on the papers. I hope this is not true.

So what do i need to do since we are on the topic of Tb's and such.

I shareboard a tb, but have known him for 2 years and love him to bits. We aren't sure if he has a little warmblood in him, but oh well. He use to be a 4th level dressage horse, but his old owner threw a fit in the middle of a test and got off and left him standing in the arena. So he was sold and thrown out to pasture for a couple years before he was bought by a friend of mine (before i met her). She got a trainer on him and now he is a jumper.

I now ride him, and he is the most polite, forgiving, sweetheart ever. I have NEVER seen this horse spook or even put a toe out of line. You could bring him inside, put him on crossties and walk away for hours (no i would NEVER do that) and come back to him standing in the exact same spot. Occasionally he gets a little hot and strong, but hey, he is still my buddy. After a ton of trainer trouble, we just found an amazing new trainer and are working hard on a some basic dressage alongside jumping. We hope to go to our first A show next year!

umm, now i got to go dig up a picture...
